Need to buy a towing rig. Looking at 02.

I bought a bigger 5th wheel RV for my wife and pulled it on the scales and came up with 23K for total weight with my 03 2500 Laramie 4X4 short bed with 47RE trans. Looks like a disaster in the making even though I have air springs and sway bar.
Drove a 02 12Valve 3500 5 speed manual dually 2WD 116K miles listed for $13,500. I really like the truck and think it will do the job. Does this look like a good tow rig at a good price?

Sure it's a 12valve? Only reason an 02 would have a 12v is due to a swap. Factory was a 24valve with the VP44 pump which isn't considered by many as very reliable.

Might want to double check either the year or the engine in it. Pop the hood and make sure it's not a 24valve.

02s don't have 12 valve engine, it is pretty much the same engine you have. With the 5 speed manual it was 235 HP/460 TQ stock, same as the 03s with a 47RE. You gain two rear wheels and a longer wheel base which makes it a more stable tow vehicle. If it is in good shape $13,500 sounds fair. I would want a 4:10 differential for pulling that weight.

Make sure its a 12v (or at least has a p-pump on it) first.

Must be a swap as it is 12 valve engine and it has a 3.73 rear end. Probably need to investigate a little more and keep looking. Thanks for the info.

I would bargain the price down on the truck because it has an older engine installed ( all though it is a better engine) That truck would be a great pull truck and I think the 3.73 gears would be good since it is a 5 speed. I would bargain and then jump on it if it is in good shape.
I would love to find that truck near me. It would be in my garage within the week.

02s came with both 5 and 6 speed manual trans. The 6 speed was hooked to an HO engine and the 5 speed was not.

Changed both the engine and differential? What a hodge-podge. I don't suppose the owner was a fan of Johnny Cash. (One piece at a time)

Well Guys, I did more investigating and found that it really was a 24 valve and has a 3.54 rear end, so I guess I'm in the wrong forum. I couldn't have screwed up more if I had tried. But the price did come down to $11,625.

Thanks for all your help.
