Mileage and gears

I am getting pretty bad mileage around town, probably around 12 mpg. I have 3.54 gears with 38s on it right now. Would 4.10s or higher be better or would it not make a difference.

Re:Mileage and gears

Well lets see here, if a stock sized tire is say 30", and you changed to a 38" tire, stayed with the wimpy 3:54's, you have an effective ratio of 2:23 or very close to that. To answer your question, yes 4:10's would "help", but they will not restore the power you lost. You would have to go to a 4:88 ratio, to get back to a stock effective ratio. This is what happens when people want the "look" of a large truck, but don't think it through.

Re:Mileage and gears

4.88 would be what you are looking for.

Re:Mileage and gears

Actually I am thinking about putting 44s on it pretty soon ;D I didnt realize how much those tires killed my gear compared to stock.

Thanks

Re:Mileage and gears

Gunracer1,
Who are you asking? I believ he has a 2500. You are a dually, right? Your ring and pinion is not compatiable with his. He has a dana 70 I think. And yours should be a dana 80. Also if they were both dana 80s, I have heard the carriers are diffrent below 4.10. I appologize if you have the correct gears laying around, and I am butting in.

Unless you got the 3.5 and are wanting to swap ME for my 4.10 rear end ;D.

Gunrace1, I would swap gears, but I also need the fronts too and I dont want to have two different geared axels.
