Looking for 12V-300HP??

I'll try and be quick. My 1996 2022CPL started out as an automatic. It's now a NV4500 with a #5 fuel plate and MBRP 4". Love the MPG & HP.

I tow a 18k lb. 5'er. Please don't preach to me about exceeding the trucks limits Thank you!

When towing and the RPM between 1,750-2,000, the engine and truck will surge violently. I can decellerate or accelerate through it but it's not a fun feeling.

I would like relevent opinions and experience to help me out here. I would like to acheive approx 300HP and have good truck towing manners.

I have 30 years of automotive repair behind me. Diesel engine performance is fairly new to me.

Before I spend a ton of cash in the wrong areas I wanted to solicit info from the best the high performance Cummins world has to offer. Ok, are you done praising yourselves?? Good, now for my ideas. I am considering dropping back to a #8 or #10 plate and 215 HP or 330 or 370 marine injectors and a 3k kit. I have not advanced my pump timing yet. It should still be at 11*. Soon to be at 15.5* I will also be changing over to 19.5 wheels with 33" tires. They should have already been delivered.

My boost tops out at 36 psi and I can currently control the EGT's while towing fairly well.

Ok, I'm done. What ya got?

Thanks in advance, Don

I'd say the surging or bucking can be fixed with some heavier springs on the throttle linkage, & as far as injectors I'd spend a little more $$ & get something other than your everyday run of the mill marine injectors I have some 300hp marine injectors with a 4 hole spray pattern & they loped pretty bad at idle & smoked alot & made alot of heat, now I'm running a set of 180hp sticks from a stock 94' 5 spd. & love them, I still have enough fuel down low, but they killed alot of the heat in the higher rpm's, still need to check the mileage, but I'd be willing to bet that it's alot better, I'd consider going w/a #10 plate for towing, since it has some defuel in the high rpm's & then get some laser cut DV's for that little pump & I'd say you'll be happy for awhile, may need a housing/turbo change to run the laser cut's???? not sure what kind of heat they make???? anyway, good luck & try the springs for the surging, Dusty

Dusty is right

I have 370's and man those things surge unless you acclerate out of it. Mine surge at lower RPMS tho, Its funny, i bought PDR 370s off of blackcloudidieselperformance and i have not had that haze at idle, or that loping sound that many people claim out of them. I do have that surging that you claim but its at lower rpms, 1000-1500 or so and when im lugging the engine a little bit tryin to get best fuel mileage..

i had 215s in my truck stock prior and man, i have no complaints they were some awesome injectors But i have also had no serious issues aside from loping and clutch failiure (thru my own fault) aside from these injectors. If you can back off the AFC and starwheel and play with plate positioning, even EGTS shouldnt be an issue, But with a stock turbo, if you run alot at WOT then egts will become an issue...

10 plate is the best all around plate for towing, i run a 100 and on the heavier end it will slow you down a bit more to control egts.... but it still gets the job done. If you like to watch your pyro alot, then get a 100 plate, if not run the 10

for 300 horses your pretty much right on track. so good luck and enjoy the truck...

For towing and the small pump I would use a 4 gsk but dont actually rev to 4000rpm unless you get the valve spring kit to go with it.The 4gsk is supposed to work a little better with a small pump.It worked great in mine.Use a 10 plate around stock position or a little forward.Roll the star wheel toward the engine a good bit.I would use the 215 injectors for those big tires and the heavy trailer or you will be letting out of it all the time with high egt.Make sure you have a free flowing intake like a bhaf of some other good setup.A 4 inch exhaust or at least straight pipe the stock setup will help egt and cool down alot. 300hp isnt hard to get at all its being able to tow with it and not let out of it that takes some preparation . With all this you will be right around 300hp ,20 or so mpg empty and will be able to tow great without a huge worry of egt as long as you drive it right. This is about the limit for a stock clutch so if you havent already you will probably be getting a better one soon.

The lasercuts will run the egt through the roof for heavy towing ,I was told that by the guy that makes them. You could get the stock size from a 215 pump to get a little more. The timing will lower the egt a little to along with smooth out the power.I would also limit your max boost to about 30 especially when you bump the timing,No need to overspeed the turbo or stress the headgasket for nothing.

That is a wicked combo,

for little moolah, And the limit of the stock clutch, i just trashed one, was 330 horses..... before it went KAPUT and dont hold anymore... mine doesnt hold on the high end anymore and even slips in the low end..
