Is 300hp 1st gen motor reliable?

I want to build my motor up and get around 300rwhp. Will this be reliable? I travel alot. Would there be any premature wear on anything? I know it would be very hard to get 300rwhp out of this truck since it's big. I just want to be able to pull the hill/mountain at a good speed. 65mhp is the magic number

why would it be hard to get 300hp out of it? the size of the truck has nothing to do with it...

300hp is nothing to that engine... the late 24v's that use the same blocks/etc. as your truck came with 275 from the factory...

You guys would know better then me. I figure with all the mods I have done and going to do I should be able to do it no problem. My bro doubts me though. I want to prove him wrong! Reliablity is a big thing because we travel so much and we don't want to be stuck on the side of the road. It gets alot of TLC.

You'll be fine at 300 hp. You can get that with a stock turbo, with a different housing. I don't really think 400 hp would be all that hard now a days. Much over that is big bucks

Keep a close eye on the EGT gauge when you're working it. You should consider a water/meth system to help with the EGT's, running mostly water (75-80%). I'd reconsider the bigger injectors, that's going to add a lot of heat.

Remember guys, it's not a pickup this engine is trying to push. The rig has to weigh close to 30k and the frontal area is like pushing a barn down the road. This engine is working hard all the time, it will be putting down that 300 HP a lot more often than any of us will.

I'm just curious, but how many 1st gens do you know over 400hp? I only know of three that have the dyno sheets to prove it. I was just wondering if there were more out there.

Yes, 300 hp is reliable. I was right around 300hp for about 3 years with no problems. Now i'm running a tad more hp.

hertz, are you running a Spicer 6 or the 545 Allison? This will be the most deciding factor IMO. Like Dave said, first things first, get an EGT gauge on it. Your air system should be covered if the FL70 has the cowl type hood or galley along the inside.

A lot of work, but if I were going after 300hp in your turck, I'd consider pulling the head and doing a port job, I'd also port the ATS, and port match the turbo to the ATS.

IMO, making power isn't the issue, it's being able to use it in your rig. A good port job would help in that area.

Good Luck, RJR

I have a tach, boost and pyro. Right now it won't go over 1100 when I hit a mountain. I maintain 50-55mph. have a eaton 5spd looking for 6 or 7spd. I'm going to drop the rear ratio to a 3.73 or in the 3.50ish range from the common 4.30. I bought this truck used and I had a small clue but I've learned alot in a year about it. I need to do some more pump tuning. The 5.9 is a common motor in the FL70. When we run down the road we're usually running 18-23 lbs of boost and the exhaust temps. never give us a problem. The great thing about this truck is there is tons of room under the hood. The intercooler is as big as the radiator and that's big. It may have a smaller motor then most of the trucks that I run with but I have them beat on MPG. All the other guys that I know have got toterhomes with big motors in them. They usually get 5-7 MPG. That sucks. Thanks for the info and keep it coming! It's really my bro's rig I told him I will buy all the performance parts he just has to get everything else. Do you know any big truck junkyards in the Northeast or PA area?

There used to be one at 64th and Essington (Mike's) in Philly, but I think they moved over to Gloucester county. I'll check around and see what I can find out.

When you swap rears try to keep your cruise RPM over 2,000 - the engine will be happier and you won't have to downshift so much.

Whereabouts in Delco are you?

Thanks, if I get stumped I'll give a shout! The 1 gen. 5.9 is a pretty easy motor to work on and tune. When we are tuning we run up and down the hills out by Wawa on Rt.1 not the biggest but enough to feel if we are heading in the right direction. This site has helped a ton.

Hertz, is the pyro mounted in front or behind the turbo?
