Lift pump bad?

How's it going gentlemen? Think I have a bad lift pump. Replaced overflow valve, installed one piece fuel lines from tank to engine. Truck still hard to start, sounds like it's airbound, starter has a hard time turning engine over. starter is new. When I push the primer button, it is already primed, you can hear the noise. The rubber boot and a piece of molded plastic came off the lift pump when I first got the truck, Think it's sucking air from there? Thanks for the help

Sounds like separate issues to me. I don't know why air in the system would cause the starter to turn slow. Might check the batteries to make sure they are up to par.

As far as an air leak, it could be the lift pump, but could also be a number of other places getting air. Is it hard to start all the time or only after sitting overnight?

Thanks waldersha, batteries were just checked-perfect. the hard to start condition is always different, some mornings it will start right up, others it will barely start. Serious lack of power, almost like its not getting enough fuel. makes way more boost than normal when towing, with no power increase

Here's a couple of things that it might be. . . do you notice the hard start when you are below half a tank or something of that nature? Maybe you are parked pointing uphill? Have you checked the fuel heater connection to make sure it isn't leaking? If you've done all that, the next thing I would recommend is pressurizing your fuel system (5-10 psi) and looking for a leak. If all that checks out, then lift pump would probably be next.

Still confused about the starter issue though. It shouldn't turn hard because of a fuel system issue. Might clean/check your connections good. Keep posting what you find, some of the other guys/gals will be along with suggestions too.

lift pump issues

Thanks, had the tank off to do the fuel lines, suction tube is rigid plastic showed no signs of breakage or cracking. replaced the fuel heater elbow, o-rings look good in bowl. How would I go about pressurizing the fuel system? Truck would start before with just a touch of the key.

I assume you have changed the fuel pre-filter and fuel filter, correct?

Infidel has some instructions about making a fuel cap with an air chuck on it, but you can also do it with a helper and a rag around the end of the air hose. Stuff the rag around the end of your air hose then into the filler neck on the tank. Then you just put some air in and watch/listen.

That also is a great way to prime your system when you do a filter change.

Definately sounds like you have an air leak problem somewhere.
