Killer Dowel Pin, KDP, Culprit?
Killer Dowel Pin, KDP, Culprit?
As posted before, I had to replace the engine in the '97 with a '94 F700 bus engine, after switching many parts its running great.
After dropping the oil pan from the original engine, we found the 2nd cyclinder back was missing the rod bearings, the rod slaps loose on the crank.
That created the knock. After pulling the timing gear cover off, I found this...
Do you see whats missing in the pic?

Not sure how long it is; I'd guess 1/2 inch.
We found something laying on one of the timing gears, which might have been it.
Mostly there was lots of metallic dust all in the oil pan, and oil filter.

I just made a keeper for that problem on an engine this last week. when I put the bolt in next to the dowel pin, I took a peice of .040" shim and cut it to cover that dowel and the bolt next to it holds it in place.
the pin is used for assembly. it is an alignment dowel for positioning the timing case to engine. Id make sure that it is in there when you put it back togeher, to make sure there is no movement in the case some day.
