Injectors for '95 2500

I was having a good-sized puff of white smoke upon startup, along with a few seconds of missing at startup--this was only happening on cold start-ups. So I took my '95 2500 into my local diesel mechanic, who I like, and he said at least one injector was probably at fault. 266,000 miles on the stock injectors.

So if I need new injectors who has a good deal on them? He mentioned rebuilt injectors too. I don't want more power--got enough power for me, I just want good, dependable injectors. Getting the stock ones rebuilt would be fine with me. Any ideas? Thanks.

It sound like you might be losing prime overnight which is causing the smoke and the miss.

That is possible, but I just had marine-quality return & supply lines installed about 30,000 miles ago, and the problem is not getting worse.

If it's not below about 45 degrees, there is no missing, actually I've only noticed the missing about 2-3 times, always when colder than 45. If the engine is warm there is a puff of black smoke upon startup, not white smoke.

Would 266,000 miles be the upper limit on injectors?

Perhaps the timing has slipped. While injectors do wear, I've had/been around several 12v's with half a million plus and no injector issues. Smoke and stumbling usually points to fuel supply or timing.

It's not real serious. But I don't like to let things go. I had the valves set at the same time, and I might have had the timing done then too... can't quite remember if I had timing done then or not.

I just talked to my mechanic again--he still thinks it's a "lazy injector". I'm not sure what to do... I have to go on a trip in about a month and don't want to have trouble, so I'm trying to diagnose and fix this now.

You could always remove the injectors and have them tested.
A lot of shops that do testing will also rebuild them.
My local John Deere dealer does testing for $5 per injector and will also rebuild for a reasonable price.

Or you could PM DTR member Don M and see if he'll do an EDM rebuild for you. He can build them for minimal power gain but for better efficiency = better mpgs.

Have you had any decrease in mileage or excessive smoke lately? It is possible that it could be injectors because I just replaced a set in my 1st gen that were bad with only 50K on them. Another thing I thought of is does it have a slight knock of any kind that goes away as it warms up? It could be a sign of a leaky injector.

cant you start the truck and then loosen the fuel lines going to the injectors one at a time. when one (or more) of the injectors doesnt make the problem worse mean thats the bad injector?

that was kind of hard for me to explain. maybe someone can clear up what i was trying to say.
