It ain't much fun the first time cause you can't see the idle stop bolt. It is back behind the pump and the best thing to do is take a mirrow and look behind there while moving the throttle linkage. A ten mm wrench is what you need and block the fuel petal down to the floor makes it easier. Also a ten mm locknut on the bolt to lock it down that you need to loosen first, then adjust the bolt. I have to stand kind of in front of the battery to reach it.
Michael

Dusty,

Same thing on mine recently. I might add that the locknut is on the bottom of the stop bolt. Mine was REALLY tight!
I used a 3/8" drive six-point socket to get it loose. Then the adjustment was very small- I ended up turning the bolt only about 1/16 turn for +200rpm.

Re:Idle Adjustment ???'s
When Rammin' On checked and set mine awhile back he told me that the stop bolt head likes to get a groove worn in them where they hit the rest. Because of this groove just a little turn will get the stop out of the groove and cause a big jump in the rpm. It also makes it a pain to set because it wants to ride back down in the groove while you try to tighten it up.

You want around 800-850 rpm for the idle - makes it start much easier. Mine was down to 650 after the throttle cable recall because the ******* didn't set it.

Re:Idle Adjustment ???'s
Yes, my stop bolt had a little notch in the head too. Here is a little info I have found-

According to TSB 18-07-98 Effects of Incorrect Idle Speed (http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1998/18-07-98.htm),
the correct speed is:
1994-1998 with AT - in drive with AC on 750 -800 RPM
1994-1998 with manual in neutral with AC on 750-800

Of course speed varies depending on engine temp, mine will idle at about 500 when just started in cooler ambient temps, runs about 800 when fully warm in neutral. Even when temps are in the 40's, cranking and idle just after starting are much better when the block heater has been plugged in (imagine that).

Also of interest (note the paragraph labeled "incorrect starting procedure" which suggests partially opening the throttle for starts under 60 degrees ambient)-
TSB 18-06-98 Hard starting diagnosis (http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1998/18-06-98.htm)
Hope that helps,
Vin
Great to find out why my idle is so touchy to adjust. I have choice of 750 or 900 RPM. Looks like another cheap fix for a new bolt. Love this site..... ;D
