can anyone tell me where exactly is the idle adjustment on the 96 cummins. the haynes manuel shows it but it does not say where it is.

 

The idle screw is at the back and bottom of the injection pump. There's a 10mm locknut on the bottom of the screw. You have to stand on your ear to get at it.

 

The best way to find it is have somebody in the cab press down on throttle back and forth with the engine not running. While they are doing this, look for the movement of the rod that comes from the injecotr pump. You will see it move back and forth. It also comes off with a littlte pressure on the ends. When you losen the lock nuts turn the rod either direction to get the idle you want. The required idle for a 12V is 750rmp's. When you get it set to this idle, drive it for awhile. The idle may drop some or in some cases increase and a readjustment may be needed again. Don't forget to tighten down the lock nuts after you adjust the idle. Hop this helps!
