I feel stupid asking: How do THESE tensioners work to remove belt?

Under the hood it points to which pulley, and which way to turn it. When I do that, it just starts undoing the bolt.

What am I looking for?

Ah, FINALLY found it...Didn't see the 3/8" square hole. I think I've got my belt tool with me.

Belt is $29 and tensioner is $70...might pick up a couple belts (keep one in the truck), as well as the new tensioner "just in case".

The tensioner isn't very cheap and from what I hear they rarely fail. I want to try a new Gatorback belt for my CTD as it lets out a 3 second squeal at shut off. Sure it may be normal, but most people I know don't like diesels anyway and going out with a squeal isn't very impressive.

I got a "Dayco" brand for $70 from Auto Zone. I gave my current one a good look-over, seemed in good shape, so I'll keep this new one in the truck for a spare. Rather have a $70 spare in the truck and pop it on on the side of the road, than to have to pay someone 3 states away to put one on for me. Need to get a spare belt too though, they ran out of the size.

With the new belt (Kelly Springfield), mine doesn't squeal either, I didn't get it hot though I don't think either, and I have 275K miles. I should wire brush all my pulleys sometime though.

When you get a spare belt for emergency use get one made for truck without AC. If the compressor freezes up you can still get home with this belt. Replace with good and put it away!
