My CTD is loud as hell, rocks rattles and rolls, My unlces 01 rock rattled and rolled and his 03 does the same thing. Our friends Wayne and stacey also have cummins and they both make a heck of a racket... I believe, seeing that everyoned here has a noise of somesort, that this would be a normal sound of a cummins motor!!
Early morning starts are very nice especially with the 5"stacks and straight pipe!!!

My family has 6- 12V CTD's- 3 autos and 3- 5 speeds. They all sound different. My '95 auto is much quieter than my brothers and dad's 5 speeds. It has almost no turbo whine, even with the silencer ring out. It has a distinct rumble though.

The sticks tend to be louder than the autos... more power too.

This thread reminds me of my 1979 chevy diesel pickup. I was driving 180 miles each day working in the oilfield. Truck started making an extra noise while driving. Driving everyday I knew the sounds it made. Talked to the dealership wrench hands, and all of the local tractor wrench hands, it was "just a diesel noise" till the piston finished breaking at the wrist pin. The rod **** near cut the block in half.

I had to buy a new engine but the dealer installed it for free.

they all sing a different song...

my new (to me) truck sounds GREAT! I think it's set at 17-17.5* engine actually sounds like a 24v (nice sharp rattle under throttle)

can't wait for the o-ringed head... gonna bump the timing up closer to 20*... oughta sound sweet then!

i think the only reason you guys here any of these "slight nocks" and that are because you try and listen to that motor too much, i gurantee if you had some gas pot it would be makin all kinds of noise and you wouldnt even care, i get the same thing if i go too long with out turning the radio on. id much rather have the passenger window open 4 or 5 inches then listen to any other kind of music.

Don`t use my truck much as a daily driver, but when I do I`m with cowboy-trucker its great to listen to the engine as you drive in built up areas.

These trucks all sing a sweet sweet song, much better than any radio can produce!
