high egt's
Re:high egt's
Eat Beef,
I have a pretty similar set up to yours but without the timing and injectors. I run around 550 degrees at 65 mph empty on flat road and if I mash the gas it'll bury the EGT gauge in a big hurry so I really need to go easy on her. I am going to back the plate up on mine too. I am going to do some pulling next week (16ft enclosed trailer with a car in it) so I'll have an idea of how bad it is gonna be. Since I put the 4" exhaust on I noticed a drop of 50-100 degrees over the stock system straight piped but since your sig says you've got an exhaust I assume you already did that.

Like we were discussing, Andy pulls a big stock trailer most of the time which is a lot different than setting up your truck as a toy. It is not unusual to be at maximum throttle 60-70% of the time like a big truck, if there is a cross wind could even be more and there is no way to dump the heat. Even in the big trucks they will only take so much then either set the pump back, timing or both. On the electronic engines it will defuel automatically and go into limp mode. When dragging super B's down the road (140,000lbs) you could be running throttle wide open most of the day under certain conditions. If you mange to keep the EGT's reasonable (1100-1200F) and your pushing 38-46 psi of the turbo steady the next thing you will encounter is excess water temps and trying to cool it. PK

Re:high egt's
You're right Pat but I'm doing less pulling now than before, however, there are two trips I know of this summer that I've been contracted to take; one to Colorado and one to Oregon. In both cases I'll be pulling four dressage horses in a 38 ft trailer , straight load head to head. You can guess the weight. So I want to be sure I'm not going to cook my engine. Also I don't want the expense of an HX-40.
And yes John, I think that sliding the plate back will help. Maybe I should take Jason's suggestion and advance the timing to 16*. We'll see.
Andy

I have a question. I am getting ready to set the timing in my truck. I was just wondering why it lowers the egt's when you advance the timing. I started thinking about it this weekend and would like to know. Curiousity always costs me money.
