heavy duty transmission?
Hi guys. I recently bought a 97 ctd with a hundred thousand miles on it and it turned out to be a POS! 3 gallons of oil in 6000 miles, massive blow-by and a syncro going out in 2nd gear not to mention I just started hearing a howl in the rear end. Now, Knowing that this has to be a fluke thing I'm looking at another one. It's a 96 ctd 4x4 ext cab w/116,000 miles, always garaged, every option, new paint, etc. The guy told me he ordered the "heavy duty" tranny (auto) and transfer case. What does the heavy duty tranny and transfer case have over the normal ones and will it hold up to the 240 horse/600 ft lbs fuel plate and 4" exhaust he has on it? thanks for your help, I don't want to buy a 3rd one! ???

thanks for the info. No, I haven't sold the 97 yet, waiting to get the 96 first. Hope this one turns out better. I like the truck, It's just embarrassing when you pull up next to someone to talk and have to squint through the blow-by fumes to see them! :

Re:heavy duty transmission?
No kidding. How much would you want for that 97? I've got a another built 12v engine and NV5600 sitting in my garage waiting for a donor body of some sort. I've been liking these dakotas running around with cummins but I hate 2wd's and I'm not spending money on a 4x4 POS Dok. I'd be more than happy to take that troublesome 97 off your hands for the right price. That's how I got the one I drive now. It has bad syncros in the 5 speed and a whinning rear end. I put $2,300 into it for the NV5600 6-speed, new clutch and a rebuilt rear-end and now it's good as new as far as I'm concerned.

Re:heavy duty transmission?
sorry it took me so long to get back, hay's starting to grow so we're busy starting water up. I talked to the dealer I bought it from and he said he'd give me $14,500 for it, he felt bad it turned out so bad(I paid $14,900 6,000 miles ago), so I gave it back to him. This new one has been taken alot better care of. Thanks again for the info!

Re:heavy duty transmission?
no, he said it wasn't rebuilt, but at last transmission service, they cut tranny filter open and found no shavings or anything that would indicate wear. Just said he ordered the optional "heavy duty" transmission..... must not know what he's talking about.

Re:heavy duty transmission?
By the way, got the truck the other day and it is sweeeet! The guy was absolutely **** about the upkeep of this thing. this is what I was expecting out of a dodge ;D. It's never been offroad and it shows, I can't find anything wrong with it, looks and rides like it just came off the lot. Thanks again guys for the info. This is the best 16 grand I've ever spent!

Re:heavy duty transmission?
If I remember correctly when I bought my 96 new, the tranny was supposedly HD. I think it was a generic upgrade from the light duty 2500 gassers to the CTD's. I got the snow plow prep package and it included a HD transfer case. Funny thing - everything on the CTD is HD when you start with a V6 1500 2WD

Re:heavy duty transmission?
the stock auto can hold a lot IF you know how to drive it right. it's usually slipping of the lock up clutch in a constant manner (pulling up hills while it's slipping...not one quick slip for 1 second) that will quickly fail the transmission. warpage of the lock up clutch happens, then comes shuddering which just follows down the line, lots of debris flowing through the tranny, and then it's dead. so RPMS versus Torque versus throttle position (which equals the line pressure inside the transmission...and RPMs too) needs to be taken into consideration when rolling down the road. i'm guessing that i'm at about 300hp and 715 foot pounds of torque now with only upped line pressures and a converter stock/UNlock switch (redynoing in May).

although the internals need to be updated for serious hp (2nd band strut, # of clutches, etc.), if you drive it right, IT CAN hold a lot of power!

sorry it's long, but that's my perspective on it.
Tom

If you open the hood and look right underneath up by the secondary hood latch you will see a sticker it will tell you what trans and transfer you have. Matt
