Hard to shift gears in 5 spd - why?

I seem to have to double clutch a lot with my 5 spd. Its like the gears don't mesh easily. Just got my truck and am used to my " shift like butter " diesel VW. Is there something wrong with my gearbox or is the fluid inside at end of life? Any comments would be welcome.
Thanks

What year is your truck? Does your clutch pedal feel normal? Can you shift through the gears when the truck in not running?

Hard to shift -Why

Truck is a 98 2wd and the clutch is a heavy clutch - meaning that it takes a lot of pressure to push it in. Yes, I make sure that I push the clutch peddle in all the way to the floor. The shift is very difficult when the truck is at idle or turned off.

You could have bad clutch pedal hydraulics.

He said it is difficult to shift when the truck is off so i dont think its the hydraulics. Does the shifter feel loose or is it just hard to move it in general?

Hard to shift-why

The stick moves OK but it is hard to engage (or mesh the gears ) into their proper position. It's like there is no synchromesh for the next gear. I have to clutch out of 2nd gear (for instance) to neutral , then clutch again into 3rd (and I have to push hard to engage 3rd). Same happens for other shifts either up or down in the gear pattern.
Hope that explains it better.

Does it change any after you warm the fluid or run it for a while?
when you do shift into a gear do you hear any abnormal noises?

At 30 K my clutch is gone south again in the 95, this is with 0 towing/hauling and mostly freeway driving at that. Im thinking there is a pilot bearing related issue as well however there are no noises. The more its driven the harder it is to shift it seems, The oil/hyd system is OK as well. From what I read using non GL4 trans lube will eat up the syncro rings leading to the problem your having also. However in my exp every time the clutch got real hard to push it soon after was time to replace it.
Like the old boss used to say "let the problem develop".
