Grinding in gear under load

Howdy,

Today my truck started making a horrible grinding noise intermittently while in gear under load. Sounds just like you were trying to force it into gear without the clutch. Makes the noise in all gears after shifting and letting the clutch out and accelerating. When the grinding starts putting the clutch in or taking my foot of the accelerator stops the noise. I tried in 4x4 for a bit and it didn't seem to grind although I only drove for 1,000 feet in 2nd and 3rd.

Any ideas where to start? Does it sound like the transmission or transfer case? I remember reading somewhere about a snap ring on the transfer case that is prone to falling off. Could that be the problem? It seems to me like if it was the transmission it would be in just one gear. But I am not sure.

TIA

i think you're right about the transfer case,i bet if you take it apart that snap ring will drop out in multiple pieces

How hard is it to replace the snap ring? Do you have to remove the t-case from the truck or just pull the driveshaft and take the cover of the case. If it is caught right away can you get away with just replacing the snap ring or does it normally chew up the internals?

Pulled the tailshaft housing, snap ring came out in four bits.

It doesn't look like any damage from what I can see. Will have to get another snap ring and change the fluid. Hopefully that should solve it.

Thanks again all.
