Ticking under the hood under load......

Does anyone else hear this while they are driving? Maybe it's normal. I wish they would have left the engine a little louder so we couldn't hear every little noise.
It sounds like my valves need to be adjusted but the truck runs great..

Re:Ticking under the hood under load......

Mine has an occasional tick at idle that you can hear...which is always followed by the RPM's either slightly lowering or slightly raising. I don't notice it while under load though. I just figured it's some kind of computer something or other doing it's thing....

Re:Ticking under the hood under load......

I don't really notice it from a stop. It does it when I'm cruising at any rpm. It is a kind of faint ticking which increases in speed as I accelerate. When I let off the accelerator, it goes away. It's not real loud and as I said previously, these new CTDs are a bit too quiet so you hear every little thing. The truck runs great and I will worry about it if I break down..... [undecided]

Re:Ticking under the hood under load......

I think most 03 owners hear some tick, tick ticking. Mine is much more obvious like when cruising up a 7% grade. With the clang clang clanging of the 1st & 2nd gens gone. It is easier to hear the melody of the more delicate sounds of the 3rd CTD.

Enjoy the quietness, now you can hear your favorite CD.

Right on.. Although, once you get to rolling, you don't even notice how loud the 2nd and 1st gens are..

Re:Ticking under the hood under load......

I am hearing the exact same thing in my '03 HO CTD. It is a faint ticking that increases in speed as I excellerate and stops when I let off of the excellerator, just as Dodgezilla describes. I hope this is a normal sound. This is my first diesel and I am not used to their sounds and idiosynchrocies (not sure on the spelling)

Yes, the ticking increases in speed but not in volume mennis. I'll worry about it if it gives me any problems.....

Re:Ticking under the hood under load......

I agree with you. The only thing I find a little weird is that I do not recall hearing this the first 1000 miles. I have approximately 1700 now. Of course this could just be the fact that I had not assimilated all of the neuonces and sounds of my new truck. It is nice to know other people are hearing the same thing I am. I certainly do not see any change in the performance which as you know is fantastic. I traded in my '03 hemi for this truck and am very glad I did.

Mike

Found this in the TDR web site:
http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...threadid=81370

my '03 H.O. had the tick at idle since new. it sounded fine at higher rpm's but always came back at idle. I found a cure and it's not pretty. Turns out that the H.O. has a notch in the bottom of the piston on one side to allow clearance for the oil cooling nozzle jet. if a piston is installed with the notch on the wrong side, the piston will lightly tap the oil nozzle on the down stroke and make the tapping noise. This was the case with mine on #5 cylinder. chryslers fix was to replace the short block @ 10,000 mi.. there was no damage to the original block that I could see. after 18 days in the shop the truck is back together and I have put 1,100 miles on the new engine and it runs the way it was designed to.

My 04 has the same tick after starting but seems to go away after warming up. It has been to cold for me to really check thou.

Wow,
You picked an old post to respond to Douglas. I haven't even noticed the ticking since the time of that posting. i guess it was just breaking in......

If the piston in wrong was a serious ISSUE... I think Cummins would have issued a TSB. Mine only rattles every once in a while and that is the clutch disc. Cummins is a very well organized company with a outstanding track record on performance and durability!

I posted about this a while ago. I hear it very faintly at highway speeds. However, engage the cruise and it ticks away like a clock. Kind of annoying, actually.
