Fuel Flow Question

With the fuel filter off, if I push the primer button on the lift pump should fuel spill out from where the filter screws on? If it doesn't what could cause this? I can get my truck started if I have the fuel filter all the way full but then it dies in 5 seconds. I pull the filter and it has about an inch of fuel gone. I can refill and then it starts for 5 seconds again but that is it. If I push the primer button it pushes air out of the bleed valve, could my lift pump still be bad? Thanks for the help!

You could have a leak somewhere in the feed line.
Air is easier to suck than fuel.
