Fan Clutch

Went to get my AC recharged at a Radiator / AC shop and the mechanic was checking things out like the hoses and such. He said I needed a new fan clutch and showed me that if you grab two blades on oppositre sides of the fan and give it sort of push/pull perpendicular to the engine block that there was some very slight play on it. The fan itself works great and kicks on and off with no problem, visually it seems fine when its spinning. I just dont want to do any damage to the water pump if indeed the fan clutch is going bad

What do you think? Does your fan clutch have a wiggle to it?
Thanks
John

The water pump isn't behind the fan as on other engines, it's separate off to the passenger side so there is no need to worry about damage.
As I recall all the CTD fans I've dealt with have a little fore to aft play, I wouldn't let in concern me.

Is it the clutch or is it the shaft the fan rides on?

When I did my KDP I found out the main big bearing the whole fan assembly rides on, and bolts to the block, was fixing to go out. It had a wiggle to it.

(Of course, this is all assuming the fan setup on a 93 and a 95 are exactly the same )

Nope, mine doesn't have any wiggle at all. It is getting a little bit of a tight spot when you rotate the blade, just a little tighter at one place than the rest, but still turns, doesn't get stuck.

I don't know how much of a problem the wiggle is, but I'm sure somebody else will chime in.

I would think anything but smooth travel would be a problem or a sign of future problems.
