Exhaust brake quite working?
Exhaust brake quite working?
So a while back dads 96 5 speed with the BD diesel exhaust brake quit working we traced the problem to the vacuum valve thing above the valve covers I dunno the proper name for it but it allows vacuum to the exhaust brake when it gets a 12v signal.
We checked it out and it has power to it and vacuum to it but no vacuum out. I can not find a replacement anywhere and BD diesel never got back to me on a if they make a replacement or not so I was wondering what you guys do in this case as I can't see this being a super rare thing.

It's very common for the spool valve to get gummed up, and it just needs to be disassembled and hosed out with WD40. The end plate comes off with 2 little screws, and get ready to catch a small spring behind the plate. Twist out the spool valve with a pair of pliers gently, then clean up the spool and bore until the spool moves through with no effort.
You may just plan to do this every 6 months as preventive maintenance.

This is for a PacBrake but is the same idea> http://pacbrake.com/PDF/L5223.PDF
99% of the time, all you need to do is clean the solenoid. If the coil doe's not have a dead short and the internal body is the issue, even after cleaning it, the repair kit is a part number 1230101.

Exhaust brake spool valve probably stuck
Most spool valves are inexpensive and easy to repair/clean. Be careful not to damage or lose the o-rings in the spool. If a replacement valve is required, try Banks Power. I have a Banks exhaust brake and they probably will sell just the valve or at least tell you where to get one.

Banks uses a completely different vacuum valve the only two that are interchangeable are the BD & Pac vacuum solenoid valves. every other component of the brakes are differrent for this model year truck.
