engine noise

just got my truck together, new marine head gasket and arp studs. just retorqued the studs for the 3rd time, i have put about 400 miles on the truck. heres the problem, at around 15lb of boost and on up there is a bad air leak, sounds like a mad cat under the hood.lol i have changed the intake gasket, checked intake bolts, and checked all the boots. cant seemed to pinpoint it. my friend was drivin beside me last night and he said he heard the noise bad. i seems to only happen when i get on the truck pretty good. cruising you cant hear it. any suggestions??

The lower passenger side boot can get cut by the sharp fender edge nearby when the boot balloons under pressure.
Cut often won't open up until you reach a higher boost.
The cut is hard to find unless the boot is under pressure.
It makes a high pitched squealing noise like when you pinch the end of a balloon and let the air out.

Make a boost leak tester like this to clamp to the inlet of the turbo.

My tester is much the same as above. What you mainly need that is somewhat special is a hose type drain line coupling, 4"idx4"od
I bought mine at Home Depot for $8.
Rest of the items are common, short piece of 4" pipe and a cap.

Yep, it goes on the inlet of the turbo, so the "pipe" you take off, is the intake filter to turbo "pipe".

Exclamation

One safety precaution I found out the hard way, the tester can fly off like a missile under pressure even with the clamps very tight. Turbo inlet isn't normally under pressure so it's not designed to hold the tube on.
I've taken to looping some baling wire from the wastegate to the chuck on my tester for a safety harness.

Good call!!! It's very true!!! I've had it happen even at lower pressures and smaller turbo inlets(smaller surface area) for gas engines and it can definately hurt you!
