I want to rebuild my auto but I don't want to just redo it stock. I don't need it to tow extreme but do want a strong trans. What are the upgrade parts that I should look for? This will be the first auto that I have tried so any hints would be helpful to, I have done several manuals before. Is there a good complete kit out there or is it better to cherry pick the parts? Appreciate any words of wisdom.

 

I'm going to assume a few thing's.
1)
a) You have all the proper tools.
b) Micrometers of all types and sizes.
c) Very heavy duty transmission jack.
d) You have the Factory service manual. (the one that has all the clearance specs)

2) You will need to purchase many different size shims to properly set the clearances.

3) If you look around you won't find too many companies selling individual parts.


This Transmission is not like building an old Turbo 350 or Powerglide.

I have swapped out worn parts in those transmissions under my shade tree many times with great success.

The clutch packs in our transmissions need to be shimmed to perfection to preform at their best.

If you really need to DIY you might try the valve body and the torque converter .

However I would not choose this as my first automatic trans to learn on.
