Cummins Cross Gremlin Conversion
Re:Cummins Cross Gremlin Conversion
I would imagine DC has a few more dollars and a number of engineers to work on a project like that.
Its unrealistic to even think about putting a CTD in a Gremlin. You will not even be able to find tires that will fit the car and support that kind of weight.
Get the Gremlin, paint it neon pink, mount some pink flamingoes on the roof, and then get a Cummins after you are long gone from their house.

Re:Cummins Cross Gremlin Conversion
I really like your ambition, but think of the cost involved just in getting the vehicle "ready" to hold the engine. Not to mention all the special tools. Torches are a must, metal fabrication tools are a must. Machine shop tools are a must. You will have to "make" alot of your own brackets, hardware, etc. and that is only the known. What about all the "uh oh, gotta figure that one out". The suspension upgrades and modifications, frame, etc.
Yes, get a diesel rabbit or diesel jetta, or locate a different diesel engine like mentioned earlier. The gremlin is a cool car, and a v-8 in her would be really nice. A 4 banger diesel in it is a great idea, and is still a pretty big project. Thats the way I would go if "I had to have a diesel in it". If not, get a diesel rabbit or jetta. Save the major projects for after college, when you will have more time and cash. For the price of a used 5.9, you could have a "decent runner" in a rabbit or jetta.
I agree, paint it up all funky, and a nice finishing touch would be those mud flaps that have the chrome woman with the big hooters on them.
Good luck, Kevin

I usually keep my mouth shut. After the ignorant statement about ranchers and goat meat I can't believe anyone would try to give this dude any good advice. My advice would be to take your gremlin and drive it off a bridge as is.

Cummins 4bt
Chevy 4-speed
Ford 9" rear
A few other miscelanous parts.
Properly sized radiator, big batteries, tranny moutns motor mounts, Intercooler?, fan for radiator, tranny cooler, driveshaft, custom rear-axle mounts, full custom front-end, power steering, and lots more, I'll get back to you when I think of the "more".
The fuel tank won't need to be big at all. You should be able to use the stock fuel system.
You will defiantly have to beef the brakes. Even OEM Dodge brakes are only "up to par".
My $.02
Merrick Cummings Jr
BTW, as a college student, take the $15K you are going to spend, and spend it on a '94 4wd 2500 Auto truck, and put the other $5K in trans, and injectors
P.S. I full built Auto is going to run near $5K (A 47RE)

The AMC Gremlin is a unit body, no frame, and even the little 4 cylinder B series is twice the weight of the AMC engine, and ten inches taller. I also do not think you have enough clearance in the front for the needed radiator capacity. I think the suggestion to go buy a truck and save your money is the best.
