Re:Cummins Cross Gremlin Conversion
I've seen a few articles about guys putting the 4 cyl. cummins in jeeps, so that may be more of a reality for you than the 5.9.

Re:Cummins Cross Gremlin Conversion
Thank you for the suggestions. Keep 'em up. Anything is welcome, no matter how absurd. (Remember, I want to put a half ton engine in a one and a half ton car...)
Good idea regarding the marine diesel. Does anybody actually have marine diesels in their highway vehicles? Does the DOT or somebody have something against this? Do they even work in a non-aquatic environment? It is definitly a good engine, though, and would probably fit.
If anybody see anything meeting my parameters for the SVO Diesel Gremlin of Might, please mention it.
Thanks greatly for all the help.

JS:
A 454 in a Toyota 4x4? I doubt it. I had a friend that put a 350 small block in his toyota, and it BARELY fit. He had to move the radiator.
Begle1:
So this is a revenge thing against your parents? Why not just pierce your nose and eyebrow and forget putting a Cummins in anything that can't support it! Keep the stock Gremlin engine and put some neon and curbfeelers on it. That'll annoy the hell out of them!

I put a B&M blown SB Chevy in a '69 Datsun pickup, complete with a 3-speed Chevy OD tranny and Ford rearend... Tight fit - had to cut out all the firewall behind the engine and fabricate new sheetmetal for that and the tranny hump, used a radiator out of an older V8 aluminum block Buick - sure was a fast little sucker tho... ;D ;D ;D

Re:Cummins Cross Gremlin Conversion
Well, the Gremlin is the revenge thing; the CTD is for me. I can also add the electric horn, curb detectors and glow-in-the dark paint later too. If it wasn't for the revenge thing, I would just get a 2500. Ah, nah, I'm hooked on the idea at this point. If not a Gremlin I guess I could use a Pinto, Vega, Escort (Oh yeah..) or some kind of similar ilk.
Imagine how cool it would be to out-dyno a BOMBed-out Powerstroke with a Gremlin...

Re:Cummins Cross Gremlin Conversion
many years ago a friend of mine built a Metropolitan with a 455 Olds in it .
Drove from the back seat.
Low 9's and broke into the 8's a couple of times.
His wife drove it to the grocery sometimes.
True Story !!!!

Re:Cummins Cross Gremlin Conversion
Thanks to the great help from you guys (Aargh...) I have found the specifications for the 5.9 liter Cummins diesel that all of you have in your trucks...
Length 40.02 in.
Width 32.44 in.
Height 35.52 in.
Weight 942 lbs.
I have also found the size of the biggest engine that AMC put in the Gremlin...
Length 29 in.
Width 25.5 in.
Height 29.5 in.
Weight 540 lbs.
So, I'm adding in a engine twice the size and weight... Hmmm.... Looks difficult. Width isn't the problem, but what shall be difficult will length ( I need to add 11 inches) and height (I need to add 6 inches). Here is a picture of the Gremlin's engine compartment with the stock V-8 mounted in it...
So, well, it's going to be close, but I think it's possible. ( I might have to put a lift kit on it to be able to mount the engine...)

Re:Cummins Cross Gremlin Conversion
Nah, I was thinking about Mustang-Style side intakes and hood scoop...
I don't know, I'll definitly need some kind of high-flow air intakes to supply the air. Even the original Gremlins had air-intake problems on their 6-Cylinder models, and the V-8 was severely choked. Jeepers, look at the front grill and in becomes rather obvious why.
No, the real difficulty is the exhaust system. I'll need to make my own, I guess. Does anybody know some custom-exhaust manufacturer that's up for the job?
I'm also looking to mount an electric fan on the radiator,(Read: Grill) but I have no idea where I'll mount the radiator.
Also a problem is the huge amount of weight in the front compared to nothing in the back. Even when I mount a huge Veggie tank right over the rear axle, I think the nose might eat the asphault when the tank is empty. No ideas on what else I can fit back there.
One thing I know is that I'll definitly learn how to weld during this project...
