Angry Crank won't turn manually

Hello
I have searched all over and tried everything I know and am asking this here as a last resort.
Truck shut down a year ago and tranny had been acting up (you can look at my posts from that time.) Had thrown a code for the gov. pressure, so I replaced the sensor and solenoid. Had also been run hot prior to that. The shifting was all screwed up and I could only downshift manually. So a few days later, I'm sitting in someone's driveway and just idling nice and smooth, about to leave. When it just STALLED OUT. No loud noise or smoke or spewing of liquids, just stalled out. Wouldn't crank back up.

So here a year later, I have dropped the tranny. But here is my problem: now I should be able to turn the motor, right? I put a pipe wrench on the harm. balancer pulley and pushed as hard as I could and it won't budge. Maybe 1/4" but thats all. No tranny and still won't turn.

Am I doing something wrong? If it SHOULD turn, then what could it be? My next day off I guess I'll look for the KDP, but I've heard that when one of those goes it's a pretty violent type of event. When my truck died it was like I just ran out of fuel or something. What else can I look for?
It just seems like a heck of a coincidence with all the trouble I was having from the transmission, that my motor would seize up too

Have never heard of one of these engines seizing up. The first thing I would do is remove the starter to be sure it didnt stick with the drive engaged in the ring gear. It is a possibility.

It may be worth buying or borrowing the proper engine barring tool to try and turn it over, just to be sure you are able to apply the right amount of force in the proper place to get it turning.

I don't know if you tried turning it backwards too? On the off chance that a cylinder is hydrolocked, it should turn backwards somewhat.

As you mentioned, I would then agree with popping the gear cover off to be sure nothing came apart in there and got between the gears. You might also try it with the drive belt removed, in case one of the accessories was seized. More than once, I have heard of "seized" engines replaced because of a seized up alternator. They were GMs, as their alternators were pretty fond of grinding to a halt, and I have never seen an alternator on a Cummins do that, but I guess there's a first time for everything.

If it won't turn one way, it probably won't the other. Try "soaking " the cylinders with engine oil, then let it sit overnight.

Thanks I will try that and also I'm gonna look under timing cover.
* I should mention that when the truck "shut down" a year ago, I had driven about 100 miles, the engine was warm and it just "stalled out". Right then and there I pulled the starter and tried to turn the crank then. (starter wouldn't even bump it) Granted the trans was still on at the time but I got the same result a year ago that I am today trying to turn engine.

I trust your advice and will try that. I'll try anything at this point.

97, sorry to say this, but I think you ought to find a replacement long block.........

Fortunately, there are several on Ebay quite reasonable right now.

If you've dropped the tranny, pulled the accessories, pulled the timing cover & checked it out and the engine still won't turn - its something internal. If it were me, I would go straight to pulling the engine, tearing it down, and fixing whatever is seized / broken. Its going to be a lot of work, but most likely the best solution.

On second thought - the only other thing it could be at that point would be the power steering / vacuum pump. Maybe pull that guy? Of course it could also be the IP / etc - just start pulling parts off I guess..
