Midnite-

I read the manual how they want you to adjust the wastegate using a dial gauge and regulated air--- is there a quick and dirty way while it is sitting at idle?

"oh, its all the way forward" and dialed it back a LITTLE

then I went to the place they recommended for smog. Guy took one look at my smoke and said "no way"
So I went home and dialed starwheel completely to the back--from almost all the forward to all the way back.
I only drove down the road very briefly, and didn't seem like much smoke on acceleration in gears 3-5, but still smokin when you jump on it from idle. Which is what they do for the smog test.

The shop I'm going to has the best reputation in town, never heard a bad word about 'em. But I'm not happy about this.
If I had more time I'd go right back, but more likely I'll check the fuel plate and move it back a ways.
Then when I go in later this month, I'll make sure to ask them to get it right.
Where is your AFC housing positioned? The housing position is what is gonna give you the smoke on a snap test, not the star wheel. The star wheel will just adjust the preload on the AFC, meaning it will need more boost for it to start giving fuel the tighter it is. Pull the housing back, leave the plate where it is and your smoke issue will go way down.

Doesn't matter when you do the timing vs. injectors. Injectors have very little bearing on the timing. Pop off pressures can vary the start of injection a bit, but it would not be noticeable. So basically whatever is most convenient for you.

Not that I'm familiar with, but maybe someone else here knows a good trick or two.

I think if it were me I'd just wire it shut. I've had mine disabled for a long time now on my 2000 24v and only get into EGT issues going up a hill with the Comp on the highest setting.

I thought I would give an update since so many threads end without one. I Installed a boost gauge and while I was at it I put sealant on the intake horn gasket, on the threads of the bolts and under the heads. First run at 65mph on flat land with little throttle it pushes 0-5 psi. Up hills with a little throttle it pushes 10-15 psi until it settles back to 0-5 psi. I put my foot into it up hill and the boost hit about 27 psi and you could tell the waste gate dumped the boost. The boost levels seemed about right for different road conditions. The strange thing is the truck stopped laying down smoke- just smoked until the spool up caught up with the fuel input. Before it would keep laying down a blanket of smoke as long as I had my foot down-even half way down. All I can think of is that the intake horn or the bolts were leaking enough to leak off boost. I was ready to do a pressure test up to the intake horn- bought a 4" and a 3" schedule 80 PVC caps that I can drill and tap a spark plug thread to use my leak down tester but I do not think I need to now. I will just drive it and see what happens. Barn- I hope your smoke issue is cleared up as easy as mine- just wish I knew for certain if the simple sealant on the bolts did the trick.
