Hello all,
I have an '05 with just over 19K miles (bought used from a guy who never drove it). Ever since I bought it, the truck has done 2 things consistently. First, if I start the truck after it's been sitting for a few hours, I can hear this ticking noise from the rear of the engine. This noise usually goes away within 2 or 3 minutes. Now even though there is this "ticking" noise, the engine never fails to start, stalls, stumbles, misses, etc. Second, I noticed that under moderate to heavy acceleration from a stop or slow rolling start, I get a good amount of black smoke. I know that black smoke usually means too much fuel and not enough air, so I checked the air filter and it was good. I also checked for any boost leaks, again all seems good. Any ideas on either issue?

Ticking sound is normal and the black smoke is also with an 04.5-> engine. Go out and work it. That motor isn't even broken in yet.

 

run some injector cleaner thru it sounds like a dirty injector. ticking depending on how loud and how much black smoke is not normal

 

Couple things to consider. . . . if your air cleaner is getting old that will reduce your air and increase smoke. Also lots of us run 2 stroke oil mixed with the fuel that will quiet things down a little. Wallies has it cheap.
