bad mpg & black smoke

Need help! just got a 96 2500 ex 4.10 176,000 miles, runs great but mpg is about 14-15 city/hwy and plowing(not running it hard at all) around10-12.
I changed my fuel filter(all rust in it)and air. I see a some black smoke (a little white I think) only when i hit the peddle real fast. I don't know if any think was done to it.

any ideas thanks
tom

Tom, Welcome to DTR! It will help to fill out your signature with the specifics of the truck as you know them to help the resident SMEs (subject matter experts).

14-15mpg with a 4.10 rear end isn't abnormal from what I've heard, though... It might need a valve lash and the timing set if that hasn't been done in a while.

Sounds pretty normal. Dads stock 98 will also shoot a little puff of black when you rev it really quick. My uncle gets about the same with his 4:10's in his automatic 97.

Just as an extra idea, you might check all of the turbo boot connections at the cooler and so on.

14-15mpg. 35" tires/4.10 combo, sounds pretty good.
