Aweful Noise?

Drove tonight for 200 miles into Lincoln tonight. But as I came into town and stopped at a stop light, I heard a terrible noise from under the hood. I pulled into a parking lot, were the noise remained, whether the truck was in park, neutral, or in gear. Pretty much narrowed it down to something motor related, right? It sounded a lot like the fan getting into the shroud, but that was definitly not it. A very nice gentleman stopped and asked if I needed some help. He seemed to know what he was doing, said he used to be a F-16 fighter crew chief. I had checked the oil, it was full. It was dark outside so I wasn't sure if it was darker than normal. The other guy smelled it (my stuffed up nose from this cold prevented me from being able to do so) he said that he thought it smelled a little burnt. His diagnosis was a scored piston, you guys think he is right? I realize that trying to describe a sound is kinda tough, but just thought maybe if it had happened to someone else, they might know. Any way thanks for any responses.

If it made a rapid clicking sound from the fan area it could be the kdp has come out and is jumping around on the gears. Fix it very soon before major damage occurs.
