any tips on pulling a motor and auto trans out of a 94?
Well there is a wrecked 94 dodge 1 ton that i am buying the 47rh lock up tranny out of to put in my truck. Originally he wanted $400 for the trans and it still runs and drives, but he said if i pulled the motor and tranny myself he would take $100 off so I think I'm gonna pull both and get the discount. I've already looked at and drove the truck and it hit somethin head on. The radiator, grille, front bumper, both front fenders, and support are all gone, so the only thing in the front thats left is the intercooler and the hood, so I was thinkin it wouldn't be too bad to just drop the transfer case, then pull the motor and tranny out together from the front since most everything is out of the way.
I'm goin to pull it tommorrow and I've never pulled a motor or tranny before yet. My friend is comin with me, he has pulled a few gas motors and trannys out of some chevys and stuff. So we should be okay, but just wonderin if you guys had any tips? I guess just get the intercooler out of the way, then take all the wiring, hoses and fuel lines and linkages and what not off, then loosen the motor mounts and trans mount and pick it out with an engine lift? i've heard of some guys just torching the motor mounts but I'm not sure if this guy will let me do that or not. Any advice or tips is appreciated, thanks!

From your post it doesn't show why the need to pull them unless you are scraping the frame/body.
> I've pulled a few gas engine/trans and I can tell you there's lot to do and most you will find as you go. It will be kind of a juggling act to do so and will likely do some banging around. Always good to spend some time reading the book a bit just to see what is hiding, it is those connections on rear top end that are brutal to deal with as you straddle the engine with your face. You can have a few lunch beers and make a day of it.

True enough Floyd. If the front end is removed then you may have some room to play. Might be easier to use 'A' Frame but as stated in earlier post separating the engine -trans would be safest way to get R done without crushing oil pan or smashing fingers. Then you maybe able to get a picker to handle the load. Engine weight alone is ~1000lbs from what I've read.
The guy wants to sell the motor and doesn't want to do the work mostly. He said he'd take $50 off if i just pulled the trans and $100 off i pulled the motor too so he can sell it. He said he had an engine lift, the guy owns a body shop. I know it weighs a lot, but I think we can get it. We will probably make a day of it.

yeah we loaded up the top of my toolbox, and jacks, blocks, chains, just about everything we could think of, so hopefully it'll work out okay. It'll be good for me to learn this. Thanks for the help guys.

I wouldn't consider pulling it for $50 or $100. I'd let him assume the risk and spend a day doing it for that.
I know you want to do it, and it's your business. But, $50 to pull the transmission isn't enough incentive to do all that work, in my book.
I'd pull the tranny for a $50 discount, because its not a huge ordeal. $50 to pull the engine that you aren't getting, I would pass on that. Unless you want the practice or need the cash real bad. One of those adjustable spreader beams would be good for that so you can balance the load.
well we got er out. Me and my friend got it all done in a little over 4 hours. We got all the wiring and all the junk off, if the front fenders weren't gone and all the stuff in the front, then it woulda been a real pain but it went pretty well. We dropped the transfer case and drive line, then pulled the motor mounts and hooked the chains on and startin liftin it out. It came a ways then the oil pan wouldn't pass the crossmember between the frame, and we couldn't raise it any higher cuz the cowl/firewall was in the way (my 1st gen motor doesn't sit back in there like your guys's truck, thats gotta be a pain sometimes!) so we ended up cuttin it out to get it out of the way since he was gonna junk the frame anyways, then it pulled right out. The engine lift handled it but you could definately tell it was real heavy. Then we lowered it a bit and took the tranny off and tc, and I got a running 47rh tranny for $300. I was happy, cuz i haven't been able to find one of these trannys anywhere and it was a good deal. It was a good experience to learn how to do this and it was nice to get the discount. Thanks for the help guys.
