Thanks, this is the kind of info I was looking for. I heard it once upon a time from someone, and Dodge/Cummins has introduced a few changes midyear so I figured it may be possible. I'm still on the fence about buying a 215 truck, only because I'm going to want to put a 100 plate, big injectors, twins etc on right away. Plus I'd have to kick my firstgen habit...

Look at the engine ID tag on the drivers side of the gear/timing case cover. If that hasn't been tampered with it will give you the CPL (engine) number. If you have the CPL #, and the INJ pump hasn't been changed, then you'll know what inj pump should be in the truck.

On my 97 its CPL 2175 which is the 215 hp pump. I know...the engine ID tag is really hard to read. You can go here to look up CPL vs HP:

CPL's for Dodge Ram diesels:

http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Facts/Cpl.htm

There is a lot of usefull info on that dodgeram.org site if you spend time searching thru it all.

Here is an exerpt from that link above showing inj pumps on 2175 engine:

These are all 215 h.p pump Numbers:
Cummins# CPL# Bosch#
3931538 2175 0402736913
3929689 2023 0402736887
3931600 2175 0402736887
3931538 2175 0402736913
3931600 2175 0402736887

The last 3 digits of the Bosch PN# for a 215hp pump are 887 and 913, the 180hp numbers are 885 and 911, the smaller 160hp and 175hp pumps are the same model but range in numbers including 838, 841, 854 etc.

The last 3 numbers (top one is 913 for CPL 2175) are usually used as the inj pump pn. If you get the numbers off the inj pump you will know for sure.

Where is the inj pump PN? There is a small placard on the side of the pump, which is, unfortunately, behind the throttle linkage assembly. I don't think you can see it with a mirror and light, but possiblly. Fortunately, only 3 bolts hold it on - 10 mm I believe. It can then be swung away a bit to see the placard.

Thanks for the post, but as I eluded to in my first post, I know about CPL's, etc. The reason I asked about 96 specifically is I did not know if the 215 motor was a full year thing, and if I go out of state to look at a truck I'd like to know what to expect. In the Chicago area, trucks start getting chewed up by salt after about 5 years, so I usually buy stuff out of state to get a solid body. Yes, I could ask the owner to read the CPL, but not every Cummins owner is mechanically literate, especially if its at the dealer, and I've gotten some funny answers asking about gear ratios and in the split years (91 and 98) about intercoolers, 12 or 24 valves, etc. Its hard enough to get some to locate the sticker under the hood that tells gear ratios, let alone find a CPL tag. Also, I haven't ever seen a CPL tag that didn't also have the HP right on it, I assume this is true for every engine Cummins sells? Many of the CPL tags I've seen on high mileage trucks are literally covered in grease and oil too, making it even harder for someone to find who does not know where to look.
