Advice on upgrading my 618re/47re

Dear Anyone willing to share advice and experiences,

My wife's truck has gone through some real bad times. At the end of last year the motor finally gave way. I found after rebuilding it that the guy that set up my pump and installed the springs and fuel plate didn't really do it right. it was getting 40% more fuel than spec at IDLE. Hence it only took about a year for the rings to go bad. So we rebuilt the motor in December.

Now my trans kinda went out. I have narrowed it down to the tc clutch being dead. It has no lockup anymore. So I am now facing getting the trans worked on, I don't want to just replace what is bad but I also don't want to pay arms and legs for a built tranny either. We pull a two horse trailer with it regularly and that is about it.

Could anyone advise me on a good middle of the road build up of my trans. I would like to find an affordable HD tc and also get the trans to perform a little more sporty and snappy. Like the 3-2 downshift when I slow to make a turn and then come out (right now it lugs out in 3)

All Advice and Experiences will be much appreciated. Thanks! CHAD

Firstly I feel you should invest in a trans temp gauge if you do not already have one.
Secondly I would invest in an aftermarket cooler seeings that you tow.

I would recomend a tranny overhaul and a good single/triple convertor.
I think you should just have HP clutches put in and make sure that the planetaries are steel.
I would also get the VB worked on to get your line pressure up and get your shifts a little more solid.
The main thing I'd be concerned about is getting the VB work done so whenever you select D or R it goes directly in.

Also there is a 1way flow ball setup on the cooler lines, I'd suggest removing this immeditaly as they have a tendency to fail and stop flow.

So what you would be looking @;
HiPerformance O/H Kit
Any hardparts that need replaced
VB Work/OR aftermarket VB from one of the big guys
Tranny Temp Gauge
Aftermarket Tranny Cooler
Aftermarket TC

Hi Chad,

Check with AllStar Automotive. 303-477-2838. Fred there built my 47re for me and included a TC (dual disk). I explained to him that that on a regular basis I tow loaded about 20K lbs. He was very honest about what he thought was required. We covered upgrades and what was necessary, and what was just for bragging rights based on my needs. he warranted the assembly for 1500 ft lbs of torque, 12 months, 12000 miles. I have put about 9000 miles on it since November and have been very happy with his work.

PM sent... If you can do the work yourself you can really save a lot of money. Judging by the way you are talking a simple rebuild, aftermarket TC, and trans-go shift kit would do you just fine.

Thanks so much guys! The input and PMs are great. My working situation is tough cause I am on 3 off 1 and out of state but I have met a guy in town that is a really good and honest builder and does side work. I am working on the best way to go about doing the pull and fix due to my wife not having another ride.

Also could you explain the comment about making sure the truck goes into R and D directly?

Thanks again.
