'98 engine and tranny swap
'98 engine and tranny swap
My dad has a '98 12v auto and we have access to two complete '01 parts trucks. One with an auto and one with a five speed. We want to put a 24v and the five speed in the '98. What parts do I need to make sure I have, (other than the engine and tranny) to make this swap go as painlessly as possible.
Your Dad has the holy grail - the best diesel truck Dodge ever put out. Why do you want to get rid of the 12V? If theres a problem fix it or yank the engine and rebuild it.
Putting in a 24V is actually stepping backwards.

There must be a problem causing it to overheat and for less than $500 you can probably double the power. JMO.
Smee like a lot of work to swap entire engines and try to get it to work when you can probably get the 12V to run good.
I can understand wanting the manual though.

Sell the 24 valve engine yank the 12 valve and have it built up stick a 5 speed in there and your good to go.
Doc is yours a slush box or a 5 speed?

There's no way on earth you'd get me out of a 12v for a 24v.
Been there done that, no thanks.
Really this idea sounds very foolish! There is nothing complicated on the overheating, find a diesel mechanic if you don't know how to fix it. Believe me you'll spend way more on the engine swap than having the 12v fixed.

You do not want to do this conversion, it is just pounding sand down a rat hole!
The automatic can be made much more dependable and tougher than the NV4500 5 speed, and for less cost than trying to do the conversion.
The 24 valve engine and its VP44 fuel injection system is no where as good or durable as the 12 valve with the P pump, and repairs are far more frequent and expensive. Run the overheating issue to ground, and sell the 24 valve trucks to someone that does not know better.
I wish you were closer, I would make you an offer on the 98 quad cab 12 valve. That is a far better rig than you can buy today!
