2nd gen p-pump/engine/tranny swap questions

I have a line on a great deal on a 2nd gen 6bt with a 160 P-pump (fuel plate, 3gsk, etc. - the truck it is coming out of hauled *** until it was wrecked). I am trying to decide whether to just get the pump and other things I need for the pump swap or to just grab the entire engine and swap the whole thing into my truck (and maybe the electronic transmission...)

Anyway, what are the differences between the engine assembly, aside from the pump and the turbo, between the 1st gen cummins and the 2nd gen cummins? As I understand it, the head flows more and the cam is different? Pistons? None of that is confimed, thus the post. Are these differences significant?

Also, on the tranny, is the A518 that I have now (with a hughes converter and TFOD shift kit) as strong or stronger than the (I assume) 47RE that is a 98? I shudder at the price of a built 47RE, and I hear about a lot of failures. How do these transmissions compare?

Thanks in advance for any input that you might have.

well first of all. the 2nd gen motor is an easy swap, as i have done it myself. it basically swaps right over, with minor wiring problems(pm me for details) the 47re is a much better trans, when built. but i you have already built the A518 i would stick with it. don't under estamate those 727 trannys, which is what you have just with an overdrive. my 727 is putting close to 500rwhp at the ground right now. but definatley swap the motors. 2nd gen motors can make way more power, way easier. have fun with the swap

Yeah, get the whole motor. You can swap engines in less time than you can swap pumps.

I would get the trans, too. Build it as you have money, then install it when you vaporize the 518. You will be able to hurt the 518 (shift kit and all) even with a budget setup on the P-pump motor (ground plate, 3k GSK, 370 injectors)

We went ahead and got the whole truck so I can just swap motors, and I am going to hold onto the tranny to build in the future once my pocket book recovers from this project. Where can I get an adapter to put my passenger side drop NP205 behind the 47RE? ( I should just search for that, but if you know off hand...)

Anyone have any specifics on the differences between 1st and 2nd gen engines--specifically cam and head differences? Are the differences between the torque curves of the two engines all in the pump/turbo differences, or is there more to it? I will definately swap the entire assembly, but I think it would be good to have this info somewhere because I searched extensively and couldn't find much more than speculation. Any info would be much appreciated for those conversations about dodge cummins that inevitably result from driving a first gen.

Thanks again!

Sorry to dredge up this old thread, but I figured I would just continue this rather than start a new one.

For those of you that have done this swap, did you use the 1st gen or 2nd gen intercooler and radiator?

I haven't done it, but I would keep it as simple as possible. Use the 1st gen IC and radiator.
