98 2500 vs 3500 CTD rear axle differences?
Can someone tell me the difference in the rear axle housing between a 98 2500 SRW, and a 3500 DRW?. I know the wheels and springs are different, but what about the axle tube/housing itself? Is the width the same? Thank you

The width from wheel mount surface to wheel mount surface is not the same 2500 SRW to 3500 DRW.

The width is different. Yes the dually axles are wider.
There are also Cab and Chassis dually axles and pick up truck width dually axles which are the widest.
The brake drums are different.
Axle saddle u bolt plates are different as well
Depending on if the 2500 is and auto or a manual you would have a Dana 70 rather than a Dana 80.
All 3500 have a Dana 80.
Describe what are you trying to do and I could answer the question better.
There are a lot of variables which you are not describing, to give me enough info. to really work with.

Thanks Oliver. Overall What I’m doing is actually complicated(I can explain later when I have more time), but what I am basically wanting to know is if I can put dual rear wheels on the rear of a single rear wheel 2500 2WD SRW truck. I know I have to put 3500 hubs on the front to make it look right in the front. It doesn’t matter if it will actually be a lighter duty truck since I’m not hauling heavy with it anyway. It won’t have a bed on it so width filling out the fenders won’t be a issue either. I’m just concerned that dual wheels on the rear will have clearance issues with the leaf springs due to the 2500 are axle being narrower.

I have a much better picture now.
I have a '97 2500 I have as a parts rig that has 17 inch rims on it with a 1 1/2 spacer on the rear and dually rear rims on the factory Dana 70 as it used to be an auto truck.
I think the 16 inch rims would have bottomed out on the brake drums though, so the 3rd gen stock 17s where used.

Brake drum clearance will be the challenge.
