94 fuel? probs
94 fuel? probs
My buddies got a 94 auto, and when ya step down on it to take off it shoots just a little smoke takes off alright and when the rpm's get up starts spittin and spuddering and looses power, let off and it quits. The tranny recently went south and he had it rebuilt w/billit converter of unknown make so he wanted to step it up a little, so we put a zero plate in it, no change at all.
Haven't had that much exp with 12v's didn't know how often or even if fuel pumps were an issue or timming slipping may be a cause.
Any suggestions

The plates don't get as aggresive in the small pumps like we have. A 3gsk will wake his truck up the most and help the high rpm fueling. But also for the problem, it might be where the gov arm hits the fuel plate. Especially with a 0 Plate, have him check where the gov arm hits the fuel plate by opening up the AFC so u can see the fuel plate, then turn the ignition on (don't start the truck), lift the fuel shutoff selenoid by hand (it clicks into the up positin if u just lift up on it, so do that), and move the throttle linkage by hand until the gov arm comes up and hits the plate. If it doesn't hit the plate, thats a problem, and if it hits way to high on the plate that can be a problem to. So let us know where that hits, and we can help from there.
It could be timing related, or fuel pressure at higher rpms, but start with the gov arm since he put a 0 plate in.

Hits close to the bottom of the plate, it had the studdering prob ever since he'd had it, sliding the plate forward from stock helped way back when but very little, and the 0 plate made no diff at all from the stock plate slid full forward.
Even tried with no plate at all
I know not a good idea but still no diff.
Thought about timming but hardly no smoke at all even with no plate, just when you first matt the throttle, thats why I was kinda thinkin it was a fuel prob. Filters not a prob either.

u won't see anythign change until u raise the timing on the truck...sputtering at higher rpms is normal when timing is low...a plate won't help that neither will the gov springs...any diesel performance shop will do ur timign...ur dealer won't raise it above stock

when i first got my truck anything above 2100rpms would snap crackle and pop...with stock timing (which is 12 degrees i believe) the optimal fuel burnign takes place between 1400-2100...which is why the powerband on the 12 valves is so small...getting the 3000gov springs will spread your overrall powerband....the mount of fuel the engine at full throttle is dependednt on the fuel plate shape (along with fuel pump, injectors, delivery valves...etc)...but changign the fuel plate will not change the quality of the fuel burn at higher rpms.....u need to raise timing for that...especially if you want to run at higher rpms following governor springs...happiest medium daily drivers find is 16 degrees...most 12 valvers will tell u their popping above 2000rpms is resolved after raising the timing
Air filter I know was a problem, so I told him to get a new one, but still the lack of fuel (smoke) with the current plate is still hanging me up, as far as the cracking & popping I'd say that is probly due to timming issuses, and the overflow valve could possibly be part of the fuel problem, but I haven't been around a truck with a bad overflow. And it seems to start fine after its been sitting.
On the other note I hate to throw parts at my buddies truck, as far as checking the fuel pressure or flow what would be acceptable pressures or easy ways to diagnoss.
Sorry I may just be overthinking this.

I have a deep cut 100 plate, afc full forward, and the only time i have smoke is If i punch it, and it's not a full black cloud either. The smaller pumps need injectors and/or dv's if u want more smoke.
