5th gear question
I have a 97 Cummins straight stock 5 speed 2wd. My problem is 5th gear nut. Mine has backed off and I've lost sth gear. I ordered parts to repair, but here is my problem. I have to pick up and tow a stump grinder Approx 3200# about 700 miles. it's imperative that I get it Now. Question: Will it hurt the truck to tow that far. in 4th gear, I mean can nut drop into tranny and cause major defugality? Thanks for the help.
Ain't gotta be easy, just gotta be done.

I lost 5th gear in my '95 way back in the day.
I drove it as a 4 speed for the rest of the year [about 20,000 miles] as I knew it would never get another years worth of inspection due to rust issues.
After its service to me was done, I parted it out and by buddy used the 5 speed set up to convert his auto '95 truck.
I still see that truck on the road.
Go pick up your stump rider and get to work.

You might want to check this out. NV4500 Transmission 5th Gear Repair Over the years there have been numerous updated fixes and various other shade tree attempts made by people to keep the gear on the shaft, but because once the gear falls off the shaft splines the mating surface of the gear and shaft become compromised which can cause repeat failures. That link is the only one I've ever heard of which doesnt have repeat failures.
