5th gear hum

Hi guys, I'm posting this question for a friend that has a 95 CTD 3500 4x4 excab that he purchased new. His truck has a NV4500 that makes a humming noise when he lifts of off the trottle around 50-60 mph. First thought was 5th gear nut so off to Valley Fuel (BD) and they say yep your 5th gear nuts backed off, so ...... a week goes by and he phones them they say he needs new brgs and this and that so he tells them to fix it 2 weeks more go by, trucks ready and the bills 3 THOUSAND DOLLARS But the best part is tranny still hums and Valley Fuel claims its not a problem Now this guys at his end, not so much that Valley stuck him for 3 large, but that he cant get rid of a problem that started at the 60k mark. So I told him I would ask the experts knowing someone on here knows.
Question # 1
Does this sound like the 5th gear nut problem?
#2
What other problem could cause this hum?
#3
Can he swap to the NV5600? (BD says it wont phisically fit in his truck )and if so what other mods/parts are needed?
Obvious issues as ujoints and what not were changed prior to BDs visit so hes sure the noise is from the tranny.
Sorry for the length of the post but I wanted to supply as much info as I could.
Thanks

3k? Wow.

Not sure on the hum. My guess would have been bearings but if they say they have replaces them?

A nv5600 will go in but it will be a bit of work. If you do a search there is lots of info on the swap. Myself personally I don't know if it would be worth the trouble.

There is another great shop a ways down the road.

Ihad the same problem. Went in the nut had backed off alittle so put the new nut on ($43 at dealer) hum is still there. I buggered the cluster gear and 2,3,and4th gears are worn pretty bad so I've got those gears coming with all new bearings and seals and syncros for $538. $3000 is a lot of money for that. He could get a remanufactored trans for $1250 plus core from standard transmission.

I don't know yet. When I get mine back together I'll find out if the bearings helped. I really think running with the nut backe off alittle may have wore the gear different and when I tightened it the gears are off alittle kind of like a ring and pinion that isn't shimmed right. It may wear in?????

I think I found out what the hum was..... The rear bearing on the cluster shaft was bad causing the variation. I should have replaced that at the time. Now the front bearing is bad and it has worn 2,3,4 and the cluster gear so I am in the process of replacing all of the above

For the last month I've been driving my dad's 98 club cab 4x4 12v. I have to say I can see why they have such a loyal following. I've been getting 20mpg around town it pulls strong (has tst cam plate) and is dependable. I wish mine had the mechanical pump!!! The only downside to the 12v is the narrow powerband. It doesn't come on as strong as the 24v for as long. Other than that I like the 12v.
