5 speed questions
5 speed questions
Hi,
this may be the wrong section but I am wondering.
I have access to a 1984-1988 chevy 2500 4x4 diesel 5 speed.
I had heard that these trucks used the Nv4500 5 speed. is this true?
I would use just the transmission and if the transfercase were right i would use that too. this truck was rolled ad my grandfather tried to rig it to make it drive again for a plow truck. It failed so he let it sit. It then got flooded and has been sitting now.

Let me know,
i know GM used the NV4500's in some of their trucks but i dont know what years. if it is a NV4500 it is possible that the input shaft and bell housing are different since its on a different motor. again i'm not sure but those would be thngs i would look into before i bought it.
well the thing is,
it is free. It is my grandfather's truck he bought for like $400 years ago.
So even if the input shaft is different i can change it. I can also find a bellhousing. I will need to find parts anyways for the hydraulics and other swap parts needed.
I just wanna find out if it would work. i know it is 5 speed for sure though. Since it is behind a V8 diesel I am guessing it would hold the power my cummins produces.

Yes it is a NV4500, but NO it can't be swapped that easily.
Case bolt pattern is different, as are the internals. I can't tell you specifics, but even the internal gears list Dodge or Chevy applications.
Kind of sucks, because I have a Dodge and a GMC with NV4500s.
Find yourself a 4BT and swap it into the chevy..............

well first off the chevy is shot. the drivetrain is good like axles and tranny transfer case etc. the engine is really toast. it was rolled and one of the cylinders was starved of oil and it seized. so my grandfather tried to rig it by cutting the push rods for the one cylinder that was seized and the one opposite of it. it did not work so well. So it sits int he woods.
So you are saying that this will not match to 6bt but it will fit a 4bt? is there some sort of adapter or way i can get around this? Since the transmission is free and same for the transfer case i can afford to spend a little bit on adapters or something like that.
Thank you

Oh, you could mate up a 6BT, but the only easy way is to get the breadtruck conversion adapters from Chevy P30 vans. There is a set right now in the classifieds, but it is for an Automatic. They are the same except for a flywheel though. The breadtruck to GM adapters tilt the engine 11 degrees, but that's no problem.
I cannot say for sure, but you could also perhaps, and I mean PERHAPS try redrilling a Dodge bellhousing to the chebby NV tranny case. I don't remember exactly which bolt hole was different, but one of the spreads was different. There was also something about a change in the pattern.
Nevermind, I found it. This should help.

so you are saying that the transmission will not bolt up to the dodge bell housing? Is that the only compatibility issue?
The bell housing is aluminum correct? if so what if i welded a new mount for the mis matched bolt hole?
My dad is a welder by trade and my friend is also a very good welder.
Does anybody have any information on this?
Or does anybody know of somebody that has done this?
Also this truck is an 85-88 so it has the nv4500 for sure right? i might be arranging to go get it soon.
thank you, and im going to keep lookin for adapters,

Kody, I believe the NV4500 started in 1992, so if it is older than that, it would have had to be swapped in.
Guess I misread your original post to be 94-98.
I did not think there was a 5 speed prior to 1992 in HD trucks.

Think I figured it out, they had the NV3500 in 3/4 tons starting in 1988.
If it has an integral Aluminum housing/case, it is a 3500.
No way on Gods green earth it will hold a 4BT under normal driving, much less a 6BT.

yea i was starting to figure that out.
I know a 3500 would not hold a cummins. I will just have to either save my money up for a nv4500 or deal with the auto.
My Girlfriend's uncle has a impound/auto wrecking yard. So i will see if he can get ahold of a 5 speed there.
thanks for the help

I got another question,
i found a nv4500 from a 93 w250 gas motor. Is this one of the "light" duty Nv4500's that i do not want? or would this work?
I also found a NV4500 that needs a rebuild. that is only $500 and if i can rebuild it myself it would only cost parts.
