2nd gear lockup with exhaust brake?

I have a customer with a 1995 12v with the Banks exhaust brake and smartlock. The torque converter stays locked in OD and 3rd gear, but unlocks in 2nd gear. He would like to be able to use the brake in 2nd gear, but since the converter is unlocked, it is providing no engine braking. The Smartlock commands the torque converter to be locked even in 2nd gear, but as I have found, the problem is in the valve body. The smartlock also increases the line pressure when the brake is activated.

What modification needs to be performed to the valve body to get 2nd gear lockup? Can a competent transmission shop perform the modification on the factory valve body or does he need to buy a different valve body (already modified)?

Thanks,
Eric

My ATS transmission will lock in 2nd gear, and depending on what speed I set the Comander, I believe it will lock in 1st gear, but I've never tried it. I don't know if it is solely a function of the Comander or if they have something special in their valve body. You could call them and ask, they are easy to work with and very helpful to callers.

I'm not a tranny expert but I do know the valve body must be modded to allow 2nd gear lockup. For specifics I will leave it to other more educated people on here or you can give Gorend Brothers a call. I think they have a rework kit for the valve body.
