16 to 17 inch rims

With 17 inch you can get a much taller tire and increase you gear ratio and that can be a benefit. I installed 255/70 17 toyo open country on my other 97 (not in sig) and really like them. I was out playing in a field yesterday and spun in 4x4 with the wheels turned, huge chunks of sod went flying.

Several years ago I bought a set of H2 17-in wheels and had the center holes machined larger to fit over the Ram spindles. Mainly I wanted wider wheels (bead to bead) but didn't want the wheel and tire assembly to stick out much, if any more, than what the stock 16x6 wheels and tires did. I had been running 275/85R16 tires with stock wheels and always noticed the tire sidewalls being "tucked in" due to narrow wheel width didn't allow the tread area to contact the pavement, from outer shoulder to outer shoulder, unless I ran lower pressure. The H2 wheels, being 8.5-in wide, allow the sidewalls to be almost vertical and let the tread contact the pavement evenly across the tread. This has seemed to provide a little better traction and steering, and a little longer tread life, although the difference in tread life is hard to measure. The other thing I like about the H2 wheels is the extra width is pretty evenly added to the backside and frontside of the wheel, which allows the wheel and tire to be positioned very close to the stock position. That means, especially with the fronts, there is no interference with control arms or anything else, when turning sharp. Also, the 17-in H2 wheels are large enough that the extra backside width fits nicely over the large drum brakes, no problem.
