12v VS. 24v transfer case

I have a 96 5sp. 12v and the transfer case has been making a grinding noise under heavy load. I located a tranfer case out of a 98 5sp. 24v for a VERY reasonable price. Is there any difference in these two cases or will it be a direct swap from one to the other? Thanks in advance.

You need to check, they could be 241 DHD or 241 LDL, heavy duty vs light duty. Other than that, both being 5 speed trucks they should bolt right in.

Isnt the way to tell the difference between the two is that the HD has a PTO cover on it and the LD doesnt? Other than that are the input/output shafts the same size and the housing?

On the back side of the x-fer case there is a round tag with the DHD or DLD on it.

Do the tailshaft housings interchange between the LD and HD?

It depends, you have to be really careful with these X-fer case, there were many many small changes over the years. Call Quad 4X4 and give them the numbers, they can help you out.

It is my full understanding that as long as the transfer case came behind a diesel, its the HD version. The 1 ton also got the HD, and I believe the v-10 2500's. The v-8 3/4 tons could go either way, and the 1500's got the light duty.

Not true, I have seen many a diesel 2500 with the light duty version.
