ford 10w 30 diesel oil???? yes or no for my 12v?

ok, kinda a newbie question, but im looking for a non synthetic oil i can use for my 12v to help with cold start oil pressure and all that fun stuff...... well i work at a ford dealer here in NH and apparently the diesel guys use a 10w 30 diesel oil.....
is this something i can also use for my truck??? use it in the winter only???

my cost per quart is $3.13, is this good/ bad or on par?

is there anything out their in the 5w or 10w variety that is cheaper/still of good quality??

how much oil does my truck take 12 qts?? and yes im still very new to my 12v, but im loving every minute of it so far

and PLEASE dont turn this into an oil war edited by admin

Not like it's a huge difference, but that sounds reasonably more than the ~9 bucks I spend per gallon of Rotella. It takes right around 12 quarts of oil. I throw 11 in and start it, let it idle for 5 minutes, then kill her and check a few minutes later. Same way for mine and my dads truck and both end up taking about another 1/2 quart to quart.

What do you have against 15w from Rotella? I don't think I've ever really seen anyone have an issue with cold starts on diesel's with ANY of the common brands.

I run 15-40 year round , it gets cold here , no problems , oil pressure jumps right up as fast as it did with 5-40 i tried once.

well normally i cna count to five (warm startup) and have oil pressure at the 5 second mark, when i start my truck on some of these 20deg mornings, i dont see oil pressure till about 15 seconds..... i might be a little skittish b/c im soooooooo used to gas vehicles and the anti drain back oil system, and instant oil pressure upon start up.

my bigger concern is winter hasnt really hit around her yet and i worry its gonna get worse when it gets colder - we normally have spells in jan/feb of couple weeks in a row of 10 below or better and im not able to plug my truck in all the time, like when i leave work in the evening, and im going to be getting called in to go plowing late nights too............ i just dont want to screw anything up in my nice "new" 12v......

ill prob try the ford oil next oil change...... right now ive got the rotella 15/40, so i will do my first oil change with that, but i think ill give the ford stuff a shot unless there is some other 5w or 10w that i should try

thanks for the replies you guys

I'd say stick with the Rotella. I highly doubt you will have any issues at all. Either that or any other variant of motor oil like Delo. Just make sure it's designed for diesel usage.

Running the 10W30 will be fine in the winter. If you look at the owners manual it does show 10W30 on it. I would only run it in the winter though.

I just changed out my 15w-40 rotella for 10w-30.I will run this until around the end of March or so depending on the weather. I buy the 10w-30 from the UFA up here, as long as it is at least a CG rated oil it will be fine. The 10w-30 makes a heck of a difference at start up for the pressure coming up when it gets cold.
