Amsoil Synthetic SAE 10W-30/SAE 30 Heavy-Duty Motor Oil

Anybody tried this stuff out? Its kinda pricey at $31.00 a gallon but they recommend running 3 times the manufacturers oil specs. So in a sense it will somewhat pay for itself. 3 gallons will cost around $112.00 shipped to my door, and ill still have an extra quart to refill new filters. The plan was to run the oil for 15,000 miles, and put a new filter on every 5000 miles. Haven't seen many people on here bring this up so I thought i'd see what your opinions were on it first.

I run Amsoils 15W40 (marine) year round, their filter is good for the life of the oil, I sample my oil @30,000KMS.
an oil change for me is every 6months I usually go 30,000kms or about 1000hrs.
Amsoil says their oil(15w40) is good for 1yr, or 600hrs or 50,000miles which ever comes first, WITHOUT being sampled, you can extend beyond this if you take oil samples. 12quarts plus the ea080 oil filter costs me around 110$(I have the perfered membership and the Western Canada warehouse is local to me)

My truck has been used for courior work for the past 3.5yrs, averaging 2000hrs per year. thats 8-10hrs of stop and go traffic for the past 188,000kms.

This thread is gonna start a dino/syn war, as some will say plain old oil is good enough, My opinion says it is not.
My opinion has been based on my use, take it for what its worth.

I run the 15w40 marine also with the eao80 filter. Change it once a year at approx. 15000 miles.

For vehicles without the emmisions crap on them-like 06 and older-i think this stuff is great. I run amsoils 5-30 stuff in mine & change it every 15000. I did the 25K once-but the oil was sooooo black by the time it came out-it just wasn't worth is to me. The oil might not break down-but it does need to have the soot/diesel removed.

If i had the bypass filter-it probably would have been ok-but the amsoil oil filter-ea080-just didn't do it for me.

Do you think it would be a bad idea to just run napa filters with this oil? Thats where i typically get all my auto parts from. They're not too expensive so it wouldn't bother me to put a new one on every 5,000. My truck typically sees 15,000 miles a year so 1 oil change and 3 filters doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Check out Bob is the oil guy web site, these guys are crazy about oil and filters, i think you have a good idea about changing the filters more often. I would no go further than 10 k without oil samples.

I run Amsoil in everything I own. I change once a year and have had no issues. If using other than Amsoil filters, it is recommended to change the filter at manufacturers recommended intervals. If using Amsoil filters its good for 25k or once a year which ever comes first. Just watch, not all Amsoil products are good fir 25k.

Keep in mind, to safely extend the oil drain interval you should have oil analysis tests performed. You could have a leaky injector or something else, you just don't know. This of course, adds cost.

If you're looking for extended drain intervals, there are less costly options out there. Be mindful of marketing propaganda, and choose wisely.

Good luck!

I used to run Amsoil 10-40 and change once a year, but I don't think it's worth the expense. Next oil change I'll just throw cheap stuff in and change more frequently.

Thanks for the help guys. I actually got the oil and put it in today. I had already previously purchase a drain valve plug from Geno's and put that on as well. I'm going to stick with my plan and change my Napa filters every 5k. and have the oil tested at the same time. At 15k. I'm gonna drain and refill, and try the Amsoil filter, then just test every 5k and go from there. Just hqave to see where I feel comfortable with it. I'm relatively new to this. I run amsoil for all my fluids, just never have tried with the engine oil. Thanks for all the help!

Cummins recommends 7500 on regular oil for the ISB engine.

here is something to read reguarding amsoil filters, I found it quite interesting,

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/sho...l+filter+study

as for advertizing hype, as I said I go 30,000kms and approx 1000hrs of use on the same oil and filter, and every sample has come back with the same results,"good for continued use, re-sample at next maint interval".

oil change is 100$ testing is less than 20$ and it tells you if your oil is dirty(soot) no matter how black your oil is you cannot tell by looking at it! mine is black as soon as I dump it in the engine, yet even after 1000hrs of run time it's still"clean". I just have not extended my intervals higher yet.

as wurkenman stated normal interval for filter replacement is 7500miles.

if your looking for comparisons, stick the amsoil filter on there, sample at every 5k or 7.5k and keep going until the test results tell you you are near the end of the oils life, or 25k then do the same tests with regular oil and the napa filter, I definately would NOT dump the oil at 15k, heck thats only 2/3rds of the life expectency,
