light duty vs heavy duty

The other day I got into an argument with my buddy. He was trying to tell me that there is a difference in the internals of the cummins I have in my truck and one that is used for industrial applications. The only differences I have ever heard of are turbo's and injectors which effectively change the HP output ratings. He said that the industrial series engines "have all the better internal components than the light duty engines found in dodge trucks". I can't imaging that cummins would have built a lesser engine to put into a truck but I could be wrong. Can someone please enlighten me I have done several searches and can find nothing to back up his claims or mine.

So I did a little more digging and found that QSB (Quantum System B) engines are what cummins refers to as industrial use motors. I believe they have a little more mass added to the block and had different emissions standard due to their off road uses. ISB (Interact System B) motors are what were put into light truck vehicles such as our ram trucks. ISB motors replaced the 6BT motors midway through 1998 followed by QSB motors for industrial use. What I still can't find is any information that says the early 6BT 12 valve motors had an industrial specific version.

Your buddy is full of it.

The only differences were for constant RPM versus varying RPM. Blocks,Rods, etc. are the same.

Let me guess, he owns a Ford?

In 1990 the Cummins motor was a $2,043.00 option over a 360 magnum truck.

For the 2043 dollars you sure got a lot. http://www.pickuptrucks.com/html/history/segment12.html

dana 60 & 44 upped to a 70 60
Transfer case
Transmission
Springs
Plus other parts

Kind of makes me wonder. Your buddy might have a leg to stand on.

That's crazy. It's close to an $8k add-on now, I think.
