$3200 to $4000 for a A618 heavy duty rebuild?

$3200 was for a heavy duty rebuild with a single clutch disc torque converter, $4000 for a 4 clutch disc torque converter! I'm in Arizona. This sounds like a really high price to me! Has anybody here in Arizona done a heavy duty overhaul with a reputable shop for a reasonable price?

I cannot afford these kind os 3 to 4 time markups!

The previous owner of my truck had Aamco (don't want to hear it- it has held up well for almost 50,000 miles now) rebuild it, to the tune of $2700. They aren't cheap to rebuild, especially if you want it to hold up. Compared to some of the high end performance transmissions, those prices are low.

I guess you need to look at what you are getting for that money. 3200 isn't bad based against the 2700 from Aamco. Inflation ect. the 4000 is CYA. You want to see what the parts to labor ratio is.

If it were me,
If the shop is reputable I would go with them. But it's based on their reputation.

Guess I'm spoiled. I do my own and get more than 50K out of them

Well I did find a link to Goerend Transmission here on these forums. Their warranties are impressive and it seems like the price is worth it for what they offer. I'm going up the ALCAN next year and don't want a tranny failure while towing my 36 foot Holiday Rambler of 10,000 lbs!

Yep, Goerend was who I would personally go with, ATS right there in Denver does good work as well, though they put you into pre-planned levels.

Either one would be a very good choice, and something else to consider, you may want to look at the dealers they have where you are planning to drive, I don't care who you get one from, mechanical things always have Murphy flying co-pilot......

BTW, I know that sounds like a bunch of money.........but considering 3K plus for a dealership stock rebuild is the norm these days, you get a HD unit.

Yeah, the heavy duty bit is what I'm after. I will be going through several mountain ranges and the last thing I want is a tranny failure!

I had Aamco do, 12 of them for us ,the first one let go after 1 year after that he knew we were putting some power to the ground. He repaired it free and we have not had 1 failure since, this shop hear knows how to build a good trans and is a stand up shop he has serviced 3 of the 12 for free when we though there might be an issue with them , but so far all is well. that said I have driven a friends CTD with a DTT build and you can definitely feel a difference. and when we have a failure next I will send one to goerend for repair just to see how it compares to the ones Aamco has been doing for us.I hear Dave has the best customer service.

I keep leaning more and more to Goerend. If I have to cough up a lot of dough, I want it done right!

Unless Goerend has local rebuilders out here in Arizona, I'm going to look for someone more local! Shipping costs just put Goerend out of my price range..................................
