I have had a number of these things, but was wondering if there are some that are better than others. Most I've seen don't really do all that much. I usually just go with what the dealer here has on hand. Any preferences or features I should look for? Brand?

For the money ,i really like my P2,you can mount it vertically,so it can be easily seen .IT handles a 15000 lb fiver with no problem and is very smooth and responsive.Maxbrake would be my first choice,just didn,t want to spend the money.

Those that say they Have never seen any difference between controllers, or don't want to spend the money for a Maxbrake, have never HAD a Maxbrake. It's THAT much of a difference.

 

What is the advantage of a P3 over a P2?

 

I don't know if there IS an advantage to the 3 over the 2. The 3 has a 3 axis 'pendulum' as opposed to the single axis in the 2, (officially they call it an 'accelerometer', but it's still a pendulum as far as I'm concerned!). There is supposed to be a better display and better fault detection too, but I've never used them, only installed them, so I don't really know if any of this makes any difference between the 2 models.

I can tell you the 3 sells for about 10 to 20 bucks more than the 2, and that's an advantage for those who sell them!

 

I read all that Maxbrake has on there site and bought one and installed it myself, I had to try it out with my 10,500 lb fiver. I went into town and did not have to adjust anything to have that extra stopping power and NO pin noise. Then it was a section of hills and some sharp turns at the bottom. I was sold !!!! I went home a connected up my flat deck 14' trailer with brakes on the front axle, I found that I had to turn the gain down some when the trailer is empty or if I tried to stop fast I would drag the trailer tires. Only when the trailers is empty I found I have to do this. Now that I have used the Maxbreake I know the endulum: style controllers like I had are junk. I trust my beaks to stop me now and no fiddling with any buttons to get good smooth stops. MY .02

 

I've HAD the regular type of brake controllers and then installed the Maxbrake. There is a reason I took my maxbrake with me when I traded trucks. It works and works very well. No more jerky stops and if its icy, they still work and it won't try to kill you!

 

If i remember correctly the P2 can be mounted vertically ,where the p3 is more horizontal,i prefer the vertical mount as it is more accessible.
