He351vgt

Good day. Has anybody played around with the HE351VGT turbo? I've seen these 6.7l turbos cheap on ebay. I like the idea of variable vanes for less turbo lag. Would they fit on a 24v?

Thanks.

They're electronically controlled and therefore won't work on an older truck.

The vanes are electronically controlled? Is the wastegate also electronically controlled or still pneumatic?

I'd like to see the guts of one of these...or at least the schematics. After all, as we all know, electronics can be made to do our bidding...

Someone would need to come up with a controller box to run the VGT. It would be pretty easy to capture the needed information off the CAN bus. Something I'd consider doing except that I have way too many projects already, and I have to work, too!

I'm a ways away from doing a turbo so I'm researching for now. I've been a fan of the variable vane concept since chrysler did it with their 2.5's way back when. Minimum lag and lots of air when you need it...also water and oil cooled bearings.

Technically, this is NOT a variable vane charger like the garretts on the old Chrysler/shelby chargers were.

A "variable vane" changes the radial angle of attack the gas flow has against the turbo blades.

The Holset VGT varies the flow orifice by sliding in the axial direction.

So while they try to achieve the same thing, the hoslet approach uses fewer parts and operates axially vs the radial adjustment of the VNT design.

I think a VGT charger would work well on an older truck like mine. MOst of the reliability problems I have heard of are overwhelmingly related to the ECM calibration of the newer cleaner engines that soot up the charger so heavily.
