which air filter?

So, I've been using the Amsoil drop-in filter in a modified stock airbox for the last year or so. At first it worked great (filter minder never moved), but I've cleaned it a couple of times now (with the shopvac and the air blower) and it's just not performing as well as it used to. My filter minder gets sucked down right after cleaning.

I've been thinking about trying the AFE filters. I want to keep my stock airbox and I noticed AFE has several different replacement filters. What I would like info on is which is better out of the Pro-guard 7 and the Pro-dry S?
Also, is the Super Stock (cone shaped drop in) better than the standard flat panel filter? Are there any other brands I should be considering?

I am more concerned about filtration and flowing enough air to keep EGT's down and mileage up than I am about super high horsepower. Thanks for any input.

Iam running AFE stageII and love it. Sounds awsome especially with silincer ring gone. I do a mixture of highway and bush driving and no problems yet. Does me well while im towing too.
I dont have any experience with other filters so I cant help ya out there but a lot of guys here like the S&B as well.
DO a search on "*****'s Whistler" and you could even build your own!! Many guys on here already have.

The PG-7 and ProDry are within .2% filtration (The PG-7 is higher). They are both good. I have the ProDry now and have had the PG-7's on my last 2 trucks.

I would think the cone style drop in would flow more air. It has a greater surface area than the flat drop in. This will help you with EGT's.

Personally, I have had only good experiences dealing with AFE products and their customer service staff is awesome.

I have always done a complete CAI instead of a drop in. You get a larger filter and a smoother run from filter to turbo.

I also run an AFE Stage II with Prodry/pre-filter and love it. It flows well and the turbo sounds great with the ring gone. I also think my mileage has increased, maybe 1-2 MPG.

Can't believe your having issues with your AMSOIL filter....I've had mine for probably 30k miles and no issues, cleaned it several times!

EGTs/Mileage is the same between it and the S&B filter that came with my CAI.

You might try cleaning it with simple green to get it really good and clean....I do that every 3rd time I clean it just for peace of mind....

the way i read it, he didn't say he was having issues with the filter, but the filter minder is being pulled down. if nothing else has changed (poor performance, unusually high egt's, excessive black smoke), i would assume it's the filter minder not being worth a ****, and not that your amsoil filter suddenly 'went bad'.

I just cleaned my Amsoil 2000 miles ago with vac and air and now I can not get over 17 psi boost. When it hits 17 the filter sucks down and my boost drops to 5psi, talk about smoke. Back to the BHAF for me I had no problems with that one.

Man you guys need to do your homework. The amsoil filter is still just a paper filter with nano fibers in the mix. Get it wet or really dirty and there is no way a vacuuming will get it clean. Yes the sucker works well but it is still cellulose based filter which has a limited lifespan. The most expensive paper filter sold by the most expensive oil dealer.........go afe pg7!!!! Proven long term in the insane high hp cummins with great oil analysis.

AFE PG7 harder to close?

I've tried them all with my stock filterbox, turbo and Smarty set on sw#1. I can't tell the difference in smoke level or power between the Nano or the PG7 flat drop in. One thing fitment-wise I notice is that with the PG7 drop-in it takes more effort to snap all of the clips. Dimensions seem identical but perhaps the seal material is stiffer?

go ahead and keep that stock airbox, on a shelf in the garage, shed basement wherever, grab a 79 dollar afe torque tube and a bhaf from napa, do the silencer-ring-ectomy and kick back and enjoy the song it whistles.
