turbo questions

My truck is down right now. Turbo went out, or was going out. Blue smoke out the exhaust tipped me off, and upon pulling the air boot off, it was clearly on the way out.
So, I need to find a turbo. I would like to upgrade slightly, but since I just paid my monthly rent, school fees for this quarter, insurance, phone, and make a weekly $100 fuel payment, I am short on cash.
My first question is what is a WH1E? I know of an H1E, but haven't heard of WH1E. It looks like it would fit, (with 4" downpipe of course) on the exhaust side. What about the intake side mating with the intercooler? Here is a link to the turbo, sounds like a good deal for a new unit. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-H...sid=p1638.m118

My second question is what is the difference is between the HX35 and HY35 from the 01-02 auto trucks? Is it just exhaust housing size? Could I take my good 12cm exhaust housing and swap it onto a HY35? Thanks in advance.

John

I thought about that and even looked at them on ebay. Would I have to get it balanced after rebuilding it?

Not as long as you mark the shaft and wheel before dis-assembly so that they can be realigned. The W is for Waste gated

This has every thing you need to know. It's easy to do I have done several.

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=185168

Plus whats better then being able to say you rebuilt your own turbo.

A WH1C is just an hx35 with a clamp on cold side. Basically a H1C with a w/g housing and a hx35 cold side. My 95 has a WH1C and my boost fitting just got me up to 30 psi with my #8 plate

He is looking at a WH1E same as what you said but it has a larger compressor wheel and the manifold flange is not the same as ours. Kinda like a early HX-40 more or less. If you look at the link above you can see that the WH1C and E are in the same family but not exactly the same Just like the HX-35 and HX-40. The H1 family is the predasesor to the HX family

So the turbo will not bolt up to the manifold without an adapter? What about if I upgraded with htt hybrid 35/40 kit? Would I be able to still have a balanced turbo? I see in your sig that you have the hybrid. Was it worth it? Did you do it yourself or buy it new?

I run a WH1E on a pulling tractor and like it okay....it is a little hard to spool with my little 300cid gasser. I have to ride the clutch for a couple seconds at 3500RPM to get it to light. I suspect you would have similiar lag issues on a 5.9....about like an HX40.

However, it might bolt right up to your manifold depending on the turbine housing. There are large and small T4 flanges and the WH1E comes with both. The dodge is the small one. I have a 16cm small T4 housings on one WH1E which would bolt right up to yours. I have another one on the shelf as a spare that has the large T4 19 cm housing, so it just depends on what you can find.

I couldn't tell which foot was on the turbo. It looks large. Do you know if it is the same as the hx50 foot? Leaning towards finding a cheap stocker to put back on the truck until funds increase... The idea of a hybrid is appealing, but I'm not sure if it would be worth the money.

If it looks big, it probably is. It could be the same as a 50....depending on what the 50 has. I am sure they have options as well, but I am sure the large t4 is one of them.

I made mine with a 35 and 40 and swapped a few parts around and there you go. I put a HX35 shaft and exhaust wheel in an HX40 and that let me bolt the 14cm off of the 35 onto the 40. You could also use a 12cm. I would Do the HTT kit for the $$ but I had a HX 40 on the shelf. It spools just like my 35 but flows more air. With there kit you don't have to balance anything. Using old parts you have to know what you can swap and not have to balance.
