tow/haul question

I'm looking at a '04 3500 DRW w/ 3.73 gears. When it's in tow/haul, it never seems to shift into 4th (high) gear. Is this normal? I had no load on the truck, and was running about 70 MPH and turning about 2800 rpms on flat land. When I kicked the tow/haul off, it immediately shifted into high and dropped to about 2000 rpms. Is this normal in tow/haul mode? If this is normal, do you run without tow/haul when you're running with an empty / light trailer do maximize your MPGs? Thanks for the info...

04 Has overdrive off and on no tow/haul.05s have tow/haul and it changes how the trans shifts but does not turn off 4th/overdrive. 06s up have both!

Bet it doesn't if its a 04.It may SAY tow haul but if it dosen't UPSHIFT to 4th gear its O/D off only.05 was the FIRST year for a working tow haul. This has been discussed with vigor several moons ago.

Hound I think wording is the hang-up here. I believe it's called Tow/Haul on the display or button, but it is just an O/D off.

Why they used that wording on a unit that only does od off and on is beyond me.The 05 is the first year of a true tow/haul.All the previous years its just od off and od on.If it won't shift to 4th gear no matter the speed its od off.

I might be going back to a CTD truck. so i was testing a 05 auto today and was running 70 mph on the interstate. I pushed the tow/haul button and the tranny down shifted out of over drive. would not up shift untill i turned off the tow/haul button. So does this sound like there might be a problem with this truck? Or is this just a late 04.5 being sold as a 05? Thanks Mopar72

I think that on the 05's there was a flash that allowed OD off instead of teh tow haul setting to be done. Problem was it was one or the otehr. Think it was 06 till you had both settings available. Please correct me if I am wrong.
The flash on the 05 made it just like the 04's were. I do think it can be reversed but not sure.

Correct.A flash came out because of complaints that turned 05s back to o/d off.Tow haul is made inop.06 up has BOTH features.
